Book suggestions might depend on your genre of choice. Two of my favorite authors are Neil Gaiman and William Gibson.

Freakonomics is a pretty interesting read. Also, the Dexter book series.

OOooooOOOooo, I've been wanting to read Dexter. I love the TV show.

The books differ from the TV show in some aspects, which is nice since you don't feel you are reading the script for the TV show. Lindsay focuses more on the Dark Passenger aspect than the TV show does and that might not be for everyone.

The Mistborn trilogy by Brandon Sanderson gets my thumbs up.
Now going through the Wheel of Time series just to get to the part where he takes over following the death of Robert Jordan , who has a more long-winded style but still engaging enough to read.
As for classics... 1984 would be a good pick. Aside from the political overtones that are often discussed to death, I also view this as a play of 3 acts: Sci-fi, Romance, then Horror.

I just began reading the Hobbit (much overdue^^). It's a very good read so far so I would recommended that.
Before the Hobbit I read three of the Iron Druid Chronicles by Kevin Hearne. Hearne actually made me laugh out loud several times during my readings. It's worth a read despite some of the plot holes and cheesiness. At least in my opinion ^^.
Although not a book the graphic novel Watchmen by Alan Moore is also high on my recommendation list.
