Description

So, I recently binge-played FF9. It was my first Final Fantasy I've ever played and, I'm being honest here, quite honestly THE best game I've ever played, Chrono Cross at a VERY close second. So, here you go. Hopefully someone else can experience this god damn amazing.

My review is below. If you don't mind rating it and giving feedback, I'd appreciate it. I'm trying to write more reviews, especially on games I'm passionate about.

Review : http://steamcommunity.com/profiles/76561198037427689/recommended/377840/

Time length is quite big but I wanted to give some more chance rather than a day or two. Maybe a bit of an overkill? :P

Thanks ;-)

That is a difficult question, from 6 to 10 they are all awesome, you should play them all!

Thinking of getting 7, 8, and 10 on Steam. I heard 8's limit break system sucks, while 7 is a bit rough around the edges and requires getting used to. FF9 just seems so refined in my opinion.

9 is my fav, 10 is 2nd fav, 8 isnt 3nd, 7th is my 4th fav

. i like how in 8 there is less of a leveling grind cuz it only requires 1000 exp to level up every level. which is rather small amount so its easy to keep your level at a decent place. but i loved 10 cuz it feels more story based.

If you do get FF7 on Steam, I would highly recommend getting the no-mouths mod: http://forums.qhimm.com/index.php?topic=14425.0
It makes the characters faces look like they did on PS1 instead of having big black circles for mouths (why they added those to the PC version I have no idea, but they look terrible).

Also, avoid FF6 on Steam, they absolutely butchered the art in that version.

Square-Enix (or whatever the hell they're calling themselves now) just can't get a PC release right as a Developer.

FF6 is my absolute favorite! (possibly my favorite game ever).

I was so sad to see the Steam version. They just dumped the iphone port onto Steam afaik ;_;
They also altered Celes's torture scene so it was less violent, and also doesn't make sense anymore. God only knows what other story elements they altered :/

It would have been so easy to do it right too.
There are several great Snes emulators that are opensource and don't require licensing, they could have just lazy dumped the original onto Steam and that would've been amazing.
There are also PSX emulators that are royalty free, so they could have lazy dumped the Playstation version and that would also have been great.

Yep, Square really doesn't seem to care about doing quality ports.
I'd say the best way to play FF6 these days is either the SNES version with Retroarch + bsnes core + a crt shader (they can look amazing: http://i.imgur.com/ljEf6I1.jpg , and are important since otherwise the pixel art doesn't come across correctly: http://files.tested.com/photos/2012/03/16/55-30086-ffvi_upres.png, http://files.tested.com/photos/2012/03/16/55-30085-ffvi_ntsc.png), or the Gameboy Advance version with audio mods (more content, but due to GBA's limited resolution part of the screen is always cut off compared to on SNES).

8's limit breaks work like this: each turn, you have a small chance of an arrow appearing next to your Attack command; pressing Right switches to the Limit Break. This chance only occurs at around 25% health and increases the lower your health is. So yeah, it pretty much sucks, but there's an exploit where you keep your characters at low health and "reset" their turn until you get the Limit Break, so you can in effect use it every turn...or until you get killed because you left your characters in the yellow. :P

7 was Square's first attempt at 3D, so everybody kind of looks like Lego people. YMMV on whether it's charming or disturbing. XD Beyond that, the translation is pretty bad ("This guy are sick" is a memetic line), but there's a fan retranslation mod that fixes it wonderfully. It says it's compatible with Steam, but I've only used it on the original PC version so I can't say whether it'd break achievements or such. Even without the mod, I'd still recommend playing it; it's ugly by today's standards, but it's still an amazing game.

Fair enough, I take it FF7 is simple combat but good story anyways, and I heard FF8's story is good for the first half and the second half depends on what you think about it

7, 8, and 9 all have basically the same battle system (ATB I mean), but with major twists. 9 has the learnable skills via your equipment. 7 has equippable "materia" that do basically the same thing, but the skills can't be learned so it's only while they're equipped. 8's system is...complicated to explain, but in a nutshell, you steal magic from enemies and your summons give you other skills.

Re: 8's story; the second half gets very, very weird and there's a twist that, although there is some foreshadowing in the first half, it's very subtle and the first time you play it pretty much seems to come out of nowhere. Which isn't necessarily a bad thing--but once again, YMMV.

8 was a very experimental game in all respects and isn't to everybody's tastes; I hated it the first time I played because I couldn't get the hang of the Junction system (which is how you assign stats and skills and is the sole reason explaining the battle system is so complicated), but I gave it another chance and now, although still not one of my favorites, I do like it.

Good luck! Are the recent ones as bad as people say or is it just "different"? I heard FF13, for example, is more or less hated because it's different but I've also heard it's a straight up bad game.

13's a weak FF, but not a bad game in general. I prefer its battle system to the PS1 and earlier games, haven't played the PS2 ones or 15 yet. 13-2 is wonderful though, and Lightning Returns has some interesting ideas..

Yeah, it's pretty lengthy. Without the FF feature, I would've hit about 60-70 hours. I got about 50 instead.

Ah the memories of me and my 2 friends pooling our Pokemon card game tournament winnings together and buying FF9 midnight on release. We also bought a ton of junk food, what a night that was.

Thanks RDP

My 1st was the 7.

At some point, I begin to think that the 1st played is the favorite for most people ^^'
8 was fine,9 too.

The 10 is one of my favorite too (the remastered one is a very good deal on sale).

The 12... was... a little strange, some MMO stuff (which is not bad, I loved FFXI and the XIV now) but in a solo game, for a FF, the 12 was disapointing.
Like the 13 series. Even if 13-2 & 13-3 have some interesting features.

So for me, for the "old ones":
7
10
8 - 9
12

Thanks for the GA !

Wow, thank you very much for this giveaway!
This is one of my favourite games of all time. I loved playing it on PS 1 long time ago.
Unfortunately I don't own it anymore :(

This is one of the best FF I've ever played.
My favourites are FF IX, FF VII, and FF X :)
When I started to play FF, the first one I have played was FF VII ^^

So thanks again, good luck to everyone and have a nice day! ^-^

10 is the best one for me. I've bought it twice already (original on PS2 then again on PS4) and plan on buying it a third time on steam eventually. 9 is my second favourite though and love the chance at playing it again. Thanks.
