In WW1, wolves became a nuisance thanks to the war taking away hunters from communities. So wolves grew to be a large threat. There have been recorded events of both sides declaring a truce to go hunting for wolves together to cull their numbers, so the wolves wouldn't pose a threat to the fighters in the trenches and the local population.
