They are pretty different from each other and I'd say in general the Total War series plays more like Civ (though it really is its own thing) than any grand strategy game. Of all of them, Attila plays the most like CK2 but it's still an entirely different sort of game. That said, both games are awesome and you''ll probably end up sinking tons of hours into either game. I enjoy both games but I prefer CK2 to Shogun 2 because even though it lacks depth in combat, it more than makes it for it by depth everywhere else - and I feel more attached to my characters and dynasty there than in TW.
Interesting. I've been trying to get into strategy since way back when Starcraft first came out, and I never seem to have the patience for them. I got a chance to get Shogun 2 for free, so I'm going to give it the old college try, but I'm going to keep my eye on CK2 as well, since it seems pretty popular.
