i pre-ordered this game (which i regret -- it wasn't worth $14) because it looked like the kind of game i would enjoy, and ubisoft said it wouldn't require always-on internet. but then it DID require exactly that. people called them out on the false advertising and they removed the always-on requirement, but i think it does actually need to check in with ubisoft over the internet once per install. it also starts a uplay launcher which handles updates and requires an extra click to start the game. also steam itself is drm, so everything you get through steam has drm. the steam drm is a one-time online check to verify you have the game on your account though, at which point you're allowed to play it with steam in offline mode.

still, it is sort of fun!
