I really love the Children of Mother Earth trilogy by Thea Beckman and have reread it many times. In theory a childrens book, but not childish at all.
Anything by Stephen King (especially The Long Walk and The Stand) and Terry Pratchett is also great. Or if you're more into scifi: the Foundation series by Asimov.
As for the books. I'm definitely not a vivid reader, thus my collection is pretty slim. But if and when I do read, I usually stick to a fantasy/medieval genre. My top 3 would consist of: LOTR (including Hobbit), the Witcher saga and Paolini's The Inheritance Cycle series (just do not watch the movie, Eragon, it was a complete trash).
