That's mainly a matter of logic and association of ideas, being smart doesn't necessarily grants an advantage.
You can see it somewhat like playing poker... being smart can help, or deserve you.
It depends on what you call "smart"... there are smart billionaires and smart mathematicians... I'm not sure they understand each other.
