Description

Steam Year In Review is comming! I'd like to ask tho, how was your gaming year overall? I think mine wasn't that good, mostly because of work and health stuff, my biggests enemies this year... life was good but I feel this hobbie got kinda burried this year. Hoping to change that next year.

Happy holydays!

On one hand, I definitely had less time for gaming this year (mostly due to work). On the other hand I did get around to Shadow of the Erdtree & Baldur's Gate 3, which have enough combined content for about 10 to 12 games between them. So a lot lower quantity but some stellar quality.

Not bad, either not great. I wish I had more time for gaming, but even if I have spare time by the end of day - I so exhausted that I'm not getting fun from playing even if I try. Being an adult with two kids, work and health issues not always aligns well with being a gamer.
C'est la vie ¯_(ツ)_/¯

Damn i'm pretty familiar with that feeling, not finding fun from a hobby you used to get fun... yeah. Hope everything gets better, happy holidays!

It was a fine gaming year. I spent a lot of time in Brotato, Balatro, Rimworld and other endless games. I also played a lot of The Planet Crafter, Icarus, Raft, and Risk of Rain 2 in co-op with a friend. Expectedly was disappointed by the Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel - looks like this franchise isn't my cup of tea. Slay the Princess became even more cool with the Pristine Cut update but I lost motivation to play it more for some reason. Same with the Dome Keeper - really good game but a bit tiring.

An unexpected discovery for me was Forza Horizon 4 - I'm not a big fan of racing games, but here it was incredibly enjoyable to drive around the world, experience the changing seasons, and see how they affect the tracks. I'm still trying to finish RDR2, but I keep getting lost in the open world, which distracts me from the quests. And honestly, do I even want to finish it?

Right now I'm playing Stalker 2, the first AAA release in a long time that I'm playing right after launch. The game isn't in the best technical shape, and the A-life system is broken, but I still enjoy it. It has the same unique atmosphere as it did 10 years ago and it feels sooo nostalgic...

Can't blame you about Borderlands, i finshed one back in the day but i have been never been able to do it on Steam. To me it's one of those game you must play with friends and hang out to beat a 50h game... that's not as easy as it was before.

Not into racing games either but I'm lookign forward to try that one. Do you recomend RDR2 to someone that is not much into Open-World games? I have it there but i feel i would leave it soon.

Yes, these are mostly co-op games, but what bothers me the most is the humor. It rarely feels funny to me, and playing just for the shooting and cool guns doesn't feel too engaging.

As for RDR2, I'm not sure. It's a fantastic game, but if you don't enjoy leisurely exploring a vast open world, hunting, fishing, and uncovering secrets, you probably won't like it much. And you should be at least a bit into the Wild West setting and story.

And thank you for the giveaway! ^^

2024 has been a fantastic gaming year for me both in terms of things to play and time to do so. I think the highlight for me is the variety of interesting titles such as Palworld, Abiotic Factor, The Black Grimoire: Cursebreaker, Thronefall, and TCG Card Shop Simulator just to name a few. Compared to the drought in years past I've even had too much to do.

Sorry to hear about the health issues and work! Hopefully you're on the mend and Happy Holidays!

Sorry for such a late reply! Between work, family, and Path of Exile 2 I'm trying to get caught up on messages! Thank you for the kind words too. I'm thinking it'll be a fine end of year given the world doesn't implode first heh. No promises there. Maybe we can get through the festivities first tho! :D

Cheetah was a very handsome little troublemaker. I still miss him to this day. I feel like a lot of folks have their stories about that one "most affectionate" animal and he was that for me. Sometimes you wish you could go back in time for a single day haha!

Killing backlog also counts as gaming so, really glad for you, I'm aiming to do the same the next months haha.

I'm curious about Wukong as well after hearing it is not a souls like, I'm terrible on those.

I think mine has been decent, and in the 2nd part of the year. It became healthy. Wherein I wasnt obsessing about going from 1 game to another. And was able to give time to other things in life.
I hope for 2025 this remains the same and I win or buy games that are off utmost priority. This will help with gratitude in all things.
Wish u an awesome 2025!

give time to other things in life

Great line, I think that's also part of the reason why I sense my year wasn't that good in gaming, but i can't complain in other aspects.

Thanks for your wishes! hoping the same to you.

I played very little, I guess I'm not that into games anymore. I've tried a couple of new titles (new to me) and if I wasn't hooked from the start, I decided I won't continue. I am at this moment in life where I think there are so many games there's no point finishing something that doesn't click with me for the sake of finishing it. I'd rather pick something "made for me". It doesn't mean the other titles are bad, sometimes I see there was a lot of love put into them, they're just not for me.

New games I've tried: Civ6, Tinykin, Sable, Snakebird, Cyberpunk, Slash/Jump, Two Point Hospital, Hitman, The Long Dark, Return of the Obra Dinn.
Demos I've tried and liked: Slay the Princess, Heavy Rain, Detroit Become Human, Tiny Glade.
Games I came back to: RDR2, Stardew Valley, Hollow Knight, Invisible Inc.

That's a point of view i agree with, you can't click with every game, even if reviews are good doesn't mean you will enjoy it.

From those you tried, did you leave any? I tried Cyberpunk on console but got too overwhelmed, it's very rare see me enjoying open world games and this one was the perfect example of why.

I get you, I felt similar when it comes to open world games. My solution was to decide beforehand what kind of a person my character is and see where his choices are doing to take me. So for example as a Witcher I'd be bery greedy and I'd play "no-coin, no-help". Or in RDR2 I'd play as short-tempered and I'd avoid trouble unless someone is going to call me names twice in a row. Or in Cyberpunk I'd play as a guy who really wants to be a good corporate so I'd skip some first side quests because my character wouldn't listen to any distractions.

Yup, I've given up on:
Tinykin – good game but not for me,
Sable – I gave it a shot because I've enjoyed one of the reviews that said "this game has no goal and you are the one who decides what's the story" but the "tutorial" level was so long I got bored when I was finally released to the open world part of the game,
The Long Dark – it was a second time I've gave it a shot and I didn't enjoy it as much as to justify sticking to this game for more time,
Hitman – I could enjoy it but the game advertises itself as "play ot however you like" yet most of the guns unlock if you'll finish the game in a very specific and tedious way – I wish they just gave me all the tools and let me enjoy the game how I want,
Two Point Hospital – I've enjoyed it but yet another game which hides the most interesting things behind unlocks so you first have to finish it in a "boring" mode to unlock things. Moreover there were so many different places and ways to unlock things I lost track. I just want to enjoy the game, not trying to remember where to spend different kind of points to unlock one paint or one flower.

Hmm... I guess I would say good but not great. I had some great gaming experiences -- trying Dave the Diver, finally getting into Green Hell and Railway Empire after bouncing off both several times, playing lots of multiplayer games on the Playstation with my friends -- but I also did not get through much of my backlog, which was a goal. I guess that will be next year's goal!

It was good, I enjoyed some old nostalgic games and some new ones too. Presently I'm having a lot of fun fighting people in Thrill of the Fight 2 in VR while getting fitter at the same time.

Every year I play less and less but I managed to play a little longer these games:

  • Forza Horizon 4
  • GTA 4 (I wanted to get all achievements but I soft locked myself at the end of game)
  • X4: Foundations
  • Metaphor: ReFantazio (I haven't played much but I want to go back to that game)

That's it. Thanks for the giveaway ♥

Given how the Year In Review from Steam does not include half a month, I decided not to pay it much attention.

As for the gaming year - it was both great and bad. Great - I finished twice as many games as I did in any previous year. I also finally played some great acclaimed games, like Limbo, or A Short Hike.

On the other hand, in face of my humongous backlog...
I wanted to finish 60 games, so 24 is simply a bit too little...

It can be dangerous when we feel like we can't get to relax as much as we need to. It's something I personally can struggle a lot with. I certainly hope you'll be able to turn things around going forward.

I always think games over all are getting worse and worse as I get older. If it's because there's just too many games out there, my taste has changed, or maybe I'm just not as easily impressed as when I was a kid. I don't know. But I do find it harder and harder to find games I can REALLY lose myself into, you know? Games where I can look at the time and go "woah, I need to eat something".

I'm not sure when any of these games came out, but what I played this year that I enjoyed I can mention, in no certain order: Jusant, Pacific Drive, SKALD: Against the Black Priory, Blasphemous 2, and to finish off the year, Path of Exile 2. Nothing on this list really got me super hooked though, but all solid titles, that I enjoyed for sure.

Of the games you did get to play, did you find anything you thoroughly enjoyed?

Oh hell i know what you're talking about, i aslo struggle with that. It's sad if you think about it cos what's the point on focus on the boring and serious stuff to not have free space to enjoy ourselves? I know it's not easy tho, our mind can be cruel.

I completely understand that, I enjoy very few games these days and I can't tell if it's beacuse of age, gaming industry, responsibilities, etc. I mostly enjoy stuff I'm already into, you know? Like Resident Evil, Spider-Man, God of War... beyond that, it's really hard for me to get over something else.

About your question, It's sad to tell no, i didn't. Sure i came back to Spider-Man (my safe game i guess) and i enjoy it, but right now i can't really tell i played something that got me as excited as i was as a kid or even as last year.

Really expecting to get the taste for this hobbie again.

I personally think that when it comes to enjoying the hobbies we used to love, our over all mood as a major decider. I know for me, for the past year or so, both me and my wife has had a pretty stressful time. A lot of health issues, and trying to figure out a way to live with these things. It requires a lot of both mental and physical energy. Suddenly you realize you've been running on fumes for months, with no real end in sight. That can quickly lead to stress and depression. One of the symptoms for depression, if I recall correctly, is actually that you're not able to enjoy the things you used to enjoy.

I'm certain that once you (Hopefully) put these health issues behind you, and sort out work to a more manageable level, you'll slowly revert to your old self again. I know I often stick with things I know as well. Such as playing games I've already played, or watching TV shows or movies I've watched before. There's comfort in what we know or what we can predict.

Sorry to hear that, hope you both can figure that out succesfuly. You know I was about to say "soon" but i believe best things in life take time, there's no point on rushing. Patience and consistency is key.

And yep, the symtom you describe is called dysthymia.

Thanks a lot for this chat, really refreshing, I appreaciate it. I wish you a wonderful end of year!

My year in gaming has had quite a Rollercoaster this year. I've finished several games , but I've also left a bunch sitting on the table lately.

Hoping to fix that next year as there's quite a few notable releases coming out! My backlog will continue to grow haha
