I'd prefer playing the second one over the first one. I played a bit of Torchlight 1 and the story was pretty much non-existent. Why bother seeing as how T2 has so much new and improved content.

While I enjoyed the first quite a lot, from what I've heard, the second one is better in pretty much every way.
And since story is hardly important in these types of games, I'd say you could as well just skip the first one and go straight to the second one.

i haven't actually played the first torchlight yet. my plan though is to play the first one first, unless i have friends playing the second who want me to play with them :)
