Maybe it is better to give it away as dead island? Not sure about the "you need saints row 3 to activate the key" part though. If it is just the saints row dlc that you only get if you have the base game it should be ok. If dead island can't be activated without owning saints row 3 it might lead to a problem though.

No, you do need Saints Row 3 to activate the key, as trying to activate DLC for a game you don't own won't register
