Favorite visual novel depends on how you define it. 9 Hours, 9 Persons, 9 Doors is one of my ten favorite games of all time, and I consider it a visual novel, but it does have several room escape segments between the novel portions. If you still count that as a visual novel, it's 999.
If you want no gameplay other than choosing branches of text, Ever 17: The Out Of Infinity wins by a mile. It's a very similar type of story to the Zero Escape series, but without the room escape parts. And Kotaro Uchikoshi worked on both games.
From the finished ones, Hustle Cat and Fault: Milestone 1.
I need to restart VA-11-Hall-A because something stopped me from playing, but it's really, really good for what I remember about it.
I like anything with cats in it (no surprises, right?) so I really enjoyed Cat President. It was very silly and much better than real life politics right now...

There are a lot of good VN's out there, and some special once and the lesser once, but I do to can enjoy them a lot ^^
But those two, specially the phenomenon stayed with me a lot.
The neko para's are fun too, but with cinder and phenomenon you have a choice while playing which makes it just that little more fun.

I was planning to get acquainted with Zero Escape series long ago, but postpone it because of lack of translation into my native language.
