STIs include a lot of different types of infections. Lots of them travel via blood or saliva, meaning that you don't need to have sex to have them. Some STIs are parasites and can literally be contracted by close contact with someone.

They can and most likely would travel via sex but can also travel by other means. Its not that sex has something special to it that allows it to make infections travel, but rather sex just has contact with specific areas of the body that could have STIs.

I guess it makes sense if they redefined the T from Transmitted to Transmissible when they stopped calling them STDs and started calling them STIs.
