This is one of the few species of mammals capable of producing toxic saliva, and it was the dominant predator on the island of Hispaniola prior to colonization. However, it has not developed any effective defenses to ward off predators that were introduced by human settlers, like dogs and cats.
Can not see it happening, but I think the only solution is for people to restrict themselves to city/farm regions to give the wildlife some chance. Thanks for the extra information (certainly something to think on).

These animals are all more or less critically endangered because their habitats are being destroyed by humans. :(
