This is an older key - the game is the 2020 edition, after all - but it is newly-revealed, and should be ready to activate and play. If you have trouble, please let me know, though there may not be much we can do about it since the 2020 game is no longer sold on Steam. Good luck!

Super curious how the keygen algorithm works with a game that is no longer sold on Steam probably due to licenses expiring for that year...fascinating that it generated one, but perhaps it always would (because all verification and validation is done at time of registering the key on Steam)? I know you don't know the answer, but now I wish there was more open-source documentation on how keys are generated...

If this is from Humble, I believe (but not totally sure) typically the publisher just generates a big list of X number of keys ahead of time and gives it to the bundle site to pull from as needed when people reveal their keys. Not sure what the experience with the Steam backend is like though. Thankfully publishers usually don't revoke unactivated keys when the game is taken down.

Seems likely, and I also am thankful.

I would assume it's something like this. When they run out of keys, the store generates a message saying that right away, and says they will restock; it doesn't generate a fake key or anything like that. So the system knows how many keys it has to work with.

It's simple - you generate the key while the game is still available. Then - unless dev manually revoke it - the key is valid and you can activate such game even if is it no longer available in the store.
