Back in 2003 there was Crimsonland - not exactly the same, but close to the Vampire Survivors, ideologically. I wasted a lot of hours on it as a kid :D
Agreed countless hours wasted on it too. It was hard as hell as well. You simply could not even finish the campaign because of the challenging difficulty I remember. The last worlds were nuts. Coop was great too although also super hard.
A lot of clones are out indeed now, and right now it seems to me that brotato is the one that has stood out from them all.
I bought this game because I enjoy VS and the clones that is has spawned, this is definitely one of the better ones. The Diablo 1/2 aesthetic is what sold it for me and it's super addicting. Great music, good boss fights and progression that feels rewarding.
Even large studios/devs are making clones of this sort of game.
[I'm pretty sure Vampire survivors was not the first].
Must be incredibly cheap and easy to make.
