The game does work on W7, just don't expect any support if you run into any trouble with it.

That bug isn't specific to Win7. It effects CPU's with more than 2 cores. I had to use that fix with WinXP when I upgraded to a quad core. I'm not aware of any problems with Win7, it has run fine for me with Win7 64-bit, so I don't know why Steam put that warning there. Oddly enough I just started playing this again a few days ago. I have it on disk though, but I don't know why the Steam version would be any different.
