So my friend confirmed that it's the correct key. He already owns the game and tried activating the key on his account. Steam confirmed that the key is valid and that he owns the game.

Let me ask the most obvious question first before anything else: Are you sure you didn't mistype it?
I got this code from a friend. It's possible that they made a mistake. Let me double check.
