Everything is on a larger scale. I haven't played enough of either game to give an in depth comparison, but if you enjoyed the first, you'll likely enjoy the second.

I do not know much about the CoH series. All I know is that CoH defeated Rome 2 Total War in their battle twice and I wanted to try a CoH.

CoH 2 offers better mechanics over the first game and some of the additions are great, like the commanders. However, in the games current state is it heavily crippled to modders, so it will be quite a while before modders are able to give the community the great mods the first game had.

CoH 2 adds in awesome snow warfare, forcing players to take into consideration the effects of the weather. The scale feels larger too as now you get max pop cap instead of capturing points to add more pop cap.
