I hereby declare January to be Resident Evil month, to celebrate the release of the Reseident Evil 2 remake on January 25!
And despite being more logical to post RE1HD before this one, I am going by the numbers instead.
Many people dislike RE0 for its more mundane enemy variety and design and the higher base difficulty, but it is a rather solid entry of the old fixed camera angle school of survival horrors, plus it has the best RE character ever, Rebecca as protagonist.
Edit: Also, the RE2Re demo is out since Friday. Go, play it (assuming you could run RE7)! ^__^

I read the Resident Evil books when I was younger, and surprisingly, my favorite was indeed Resident Evil 0. S.D. Perry is the name of the author, she is a cool person and I talked with her at twitter a long time ago.
The books are aimed at a young-adult audience tho, if that is not your thing you may not like them. Also there is a discontinuity between RE0 and RE1, because she wrote 0 after finishing all the others, or something like that I do not remember the exact details.
Also, this franchise is "iconic" in my life, because when I was playing the first one, at the mansion's rooftop fighting the boss, a burglar broke into my house, I was alone with every light turned off, so he thought no one was at home. I heard a glass breaking and, with all the adrenaline and tension from the boss fight, I almost shitted myself. I ran to the receiving room to see what happened and there he was, behind the door with his arm going trough the broken glass trying to unlock the door from inside. He had red eyes(probably high) and a huge black beard. There was a machete close to my position (a tool I used for gardening frequently so I always left it by the door) I grabbed it and for a second we saw each other in the eyes and the dude just walked away and ran.
I never finished the boss fight and for some weeks I couldn't even play games. This was on the Playstation.
Now, years later, living in a place far away. I bought the remaster version on Steam and I haven't put myself to finish the damn game.
