Yeah, it a famous one. If you are new to anime, starting with something more mainstream, with no requirement of being aware of cliché or Japanese stuff, might be a good idea.
Though, after reading some of your other comments, I am no longer sure if your are new to anime or not.

Well, I consider myself a real cherry when It comes to anime, this is what I´ve seen so far:
Akira (movie)
Gunsmith Cats (movie)
Tengen Toppa Gurren-Lagann (series)
Neon Genesis Evangelion (series)
Robotech (Yes, many will say this is the shit version of Macross but It is what It is).
Ghost in the shell movies (at least 2 and I can´t remember that much)
Ninja Scroll (movie)
Dragon Ball series (as time goes by It gets better) DBZ is godly awful.
Street Fighter II: The Animated Movie
Slam Dunk (some of It)

Anime to watch:
Berserk/Kenpuu Denki Berserk
Golden Boy
Patlabor
Evangelion movies
Dominion Tank Police
Riding Bean
Robot Carnival
Megazone 23
Psycho Pass (recommended by gaklimited here)
Irresponsible Captain Tylor (recommended by enfria)

This list was in a notepad for a while, I think I´m gonna check Dominion Tank Police soon :)
For some reason i feel like the mid 80´s and 90´s anime is really good when It comes to the drawing.

Still need to check MilConDoin recommendations

You have seen some good anime. It's weird you haven't watched any of the mainstream, that what usually people start with. Though I guess that's good, since imo not all mainstream anime are good.
Of your "to watch" list, I highly recommend Golden Boy and Psycho Pass.

I agree with you. The late 80s and 90s art is beautiful. Sure today's anime is all shiny and have great animation, but somehow I really like that art style. I guess it's nostalgic.

I forgot I also watched DBZ Bardock Story time ago. It's the only movie I really liked about that series, didn't know there was remaster and It's not canon according to fans : https://youtu.be/jCdNuT0u8ww Can't be bothered with all the new stuff.

Will give priority to Golden Boy and Psycho pass on the list then. You hit the nail on something, some animation today is too shiny/colorful for my taste.

Wow, big list but Akira with only 5 stars, sacrilege! Just kidding, but seriously It has one of the best intros of all time.
Do I need background story for watching Psycho Pass the movie? cause that cover really attracts the eye.
I wonder If there's no Cowboy Bebop, Neon Genesis Evangelion, Patlabor or Gunsmith Cats movie because It's for normies :P

You should definitely watch Psycho Pass 1 before watching the movie. Bebop and Eva are on my plan to watch list.

You may not like, but give it a try, I promise you it will be at least memorable.

Also, +1 for the suggestion above me.

I'm not really a fan of love-comedy but thanks for sharing. I do agree that the premise sounds addictive for people starting on anime.
I wanted to see this one time ago just for fun but time gets in the way

just today I was lreflecting about the mangas I've been reading lately, and they are just way too brutal (tenku shinpan, kimetsu no yaiba, goblin slayer, shingeki no kyoujin, btoooom, darwin's game, to name some), commercial (one piece, dragon ball, seven deadly sins, fairy tail, etc.) or plainly weird/nonsensical (dorohedoro), and suddenly found myself longing for something more lighthearted and authentic. I really hope you find it gratifying.

Looks live you've already seen a lot of the stuff that I got my start on, so kudos! I grew up with Robotech, so don't let any Macross purists look down on you. It's possible to enjoy both.
In that vein, I'll recommend the Macross Plus OVA. I think there's a shorter version that compiles it into a single movie, but I can't speak to its quality.
I'll second the recommendation of Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex, as well as 2nd Gig (the second season of the show). Some episodes can get a bit monologuey, but they usually have a point to it.
If you haven't seen Cowboy Bebop, I highly recommend it. If you want something by the same people but set in feudal Japan, Samurai Champloo would be a good follow-up.
For more mecha, you might check out 08th MS Team. It's a mini-series set in the Gundam universe that keeps things focused more on the ground level conflict than on psychic heroes duelling in outer space.

I totally agree with you about the 80's and 90's anime. Something about how they draw light and movement just doesn't get captured by a lot of modern stuff. Venus Wars and Record of Lodoss War are both from that time frame too, but I honestly couldn't tell you if they're good or if I just have nostalgia for them.
Regarding Dominion Tank Police, I remember there being something weird to the dub of that, like playing different music in some segments than the subtitled version. If you can switch freely back and forth in whatever format you watch it in, might be something to check out for curiousity's sake.

Comedy is pretty subjective, but I will say Asobasi Asobase is about the only time a "whacky slice-of-life story about the antics of school girls" actually got a laugh out of me. So, take that for what you will.

Studio Ghibli has put out some pretty high quality stuff, so it's hard to know where to start. Maybe Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind?

I've been meaning to check out Patlabor and Megazone for years, so maybe I should get around to that.

Coincidentally I was watching the first episode of Tank Police last night and you're right, I might stay with the english dub because It has better audio level and the intro song is way more catchy. Thank you so much for all the new suggestions, I will check the trailers soon and let you know what I think of, despite the giveaway is nearly ending.

Just watched "Riding Bean" (1989). Very enjoyable, simple premise but that art style man, and the fact there's so much detail on destructible things. Only 45 minutes so It's something I can keep up with easily.
