It was balanced like seNs666 said, even tho I knitted it virtually before I noticed all the 8s.
However, haven't you swapped the direction of the binary for the 3rd and 4th letter?
I read 1st, 2nd, and 5th, (bottom-to-top) right-to-left, and had to read 3rd and 4th left-to-right. Or is this by design?

No, I figured it out on my own. She wouldn't know what binary was anyway (despite me having a binary tattoo on my arm saying 42). And english terms aren't really her forte.

Nice -and original- puzzle, doable with some googling to find the chart... not a far-fetched riddle requiring to be in the head of the puzzle maker!
I found the binary encoding from the start, but it did not work until I realized that knitting goes left to right and then back right to left
And thanks for the GAs too!
Thanks you for solving! I think reading the chart might be the most tricky part, since one naturally would read it top>down left>right. I'm sure there are at least a couple of people stuck because of it .
Looking at the comments in the discussion, you have several active solvers like Liege or redsweater who say they are almost there, I guess they have spotted the binary code but not the right order, either they have not tried right-> left (this where I got stuck) or they are trying from the top - I started from row nr 1 at the bottom because I thought it was the most sensible but I was ready to try various orders :)

It's by design, it's meant to be read as flat knitting chart (to add an extra challenge)
