I was a long time Everquest player, and vowed that would be the last MMO I'd ever play. At their core they are all the same - skill means nothing, time spent playing is all that matters. Got this in a Humble Monthly bundle and will not use it
In any case, how would you be able to get a MMO to have skill-based gameplay without having a tickrate high enough to inviabilize its netcode scalability?
Deemphasize gear and make the combat more of the action variety, like in Neverwinter. The problem with MMOs is the carrot they all use to get people to play more is better equipment of some kind. So you play a ton, grind grind grind, and gear up. There's no fun in that.
Maybe what I've come to realize is that I like online fps games because skill matters, and MMOs are just not my thing.
