All that matters is what we do, and why. The reason for that is because we are all going to die, and our next lives will be determined by what we did in this one.
And what if, after you die, nothing happens ?
What if this body is really all we have ? And when our brain stops, we just cease to exist ? We rot away, and all we have left is bones ?
No offence, I dont mind if you find consoling in this kind of thought.. but it kind of makes more sense. Its just psychiology. We make up something like that to feel better.
All anyone can do is to measure the truth of what he or she perceives (to the best of his or her ability) and make a judgement call. Some people delude themselves into thinking otherwise, but logical analysis debunks that fairly easily.
It used to be better with bows. Gentelmans got exhausted and everything ended with ties. (Gentelmens with bows and ties? get it? mine is better :D)
