My first Elder Scrolls game was Arena.
I actually "rented" it from a place about 1/2 and hour drive from my home.
I can't remember what it cost but it was for two weeks.
I "renewed" that for another 2 and then copied the thing and returned it.

I have only played Skyrim myself. Oblivion is still on the infinite to-do list and I will quite likely play the next one, whenever it comes out.

I recommend a lot of the basic mods and the ones removing the scaling damage. It's annoying to fight the same mudcrabs at level 1 and still find them a challenge 10 levels higher.
Fallout 3 suffers from the same issues.
