It's been 10 years since S.T.A.L.K.E.R. was released. To be fair, I was waiting for its release since 2003, and when it was released in March 2007, I was surprised by how the game was different from what we saw and read all those years.
Let's say it was similar to No Man's Sky in how hyped it was in CIS, and no one actually knew at the moment that the original developers left the office in 2004 (and formed the company which later creates Metro). It was THQ who asked GSC to cut down the scale of the project and turn it into shooty experience without deep artifical intelligence which was promised long ago and was really ambitious task to do.
Years later, we all got a chance to play old good Build 1935 of S.T.A.L.K.E.R. and S.T.A.L.K.E.R. Lost Alpha to see how great this game could be. Years later, hundreds of early access survival games accomplished what GSC was trying to do. And I believe that right now there are many stalkers out there who are still looking for artefacts.
This is truly a cult classic, make no mistake.

Jokes aside. STALKER series are truly amazing games, from the atmosphere to the storyline. I wish more developers follow the path that STALKER has left behind.
In the other hand, STALKER games are heavily influenced on the book Roadside Picnic (written by Arkady and Boris Strugatsky in 1971) and the 1979 film adaptation stalker, both are great.
Finally, you have Metro 2033 and Metro Lastlight, another two amazing games which the story is based on Dmitry Glukhovsky's novel Metro 2033 (and Metro 2034, Metro 2035).

Personally i consider the Metro series one the best games of its gender, at least story, sound and graphics wise. Surly one of my favorite games! Never played S.T.A.L.K.E.R. but if is in line with Metro, i'll surely love it!

I'm sure you will like STALKER, give it a try and don't forgot to mod it bc there some bugs and the AI is pretty dumb.

oh and you might want to try the "Lost Alpha" mod for stalker...well it is rather a standalone of the alpha version, refurbished and all but more close to the original idea of the game, i think.

I would play this game again , its rpg and story based game but there is alot of mission you can discover the map.
This game make me love post-apocalyptic worlds.(Play Metro 2033 too and if you can just be slow dont pew pew everythink :P there is a story behind this game and metro 2033 and its really good )
