Well they're kinda of a "small" "indie" studio, they surely did some big stuff while working with other people thanks for their founder contacts, but a lot of their games was a very "indie" feel in the good quality you don't see from the big studios.
Pillars being their own love child they created by themselves got a lot of that feel of a indie studio who trully loved what they were doing and wanted it to be good than just another market game to cash over.
To put it short, Obsidian is a studio who aways gave me that indie caring feel for their games.

Ah, cool! I remember them from Neverwinter Nights 2 (one of my favorites) and SWKotOR II; Somehow, always considered them to not be an indie studio, but I agree with what you wrote... their games do have an "indie" feel to me.

But yeah, sadly I never had the chance to play NWN2 =/ But SWKotOR II it's one of my favs old RPGs, even if just as Fallout 2 it ended with a lot of cut content because the timeline to launch D=
Pillars and Tyranny been the two games I've been thinking I need to get to play yet, even if backlog monster keep telling me I need to finish more stuff before =X

Neverwinter Nights is, imo, sooo gooood... Deep nostalgia. I personally prefer the sequel, but both are very good titles. Haven't tried the following games, though.
I started Pillars of Eternity and loved it, didn't finish it yet because Divinity 2 came out and it rocked my world upside down, lol. That game's fantastic. Another one to your to-play list, if you haven't given it a try already. :)

The first NWN was awesome, played all DLCs and a bunch of extra fanmade stuff. Reason I wanted to try the NWN2 but I have some trouble to play stuff outside steam (My backlog is agressive and make me forget about games outside steam XD)
I heard a lot about Divinity OS 2 too, bywhat a friend told me he is even greater (or messier) to play as coop with a friend, but I've not tried the Original Sin serie yet ^^'

I haven't played the first Original Sin (I have a very obnoxious ability to start games by the second installment), but the second one was really a blast. Your friend is right about the co-op, too. :)

I did that a few times too, but as I'm a curious person, and I like a lot stories more than once I went to wikias to read the story of a previous game. (Some I even try to play but for some games the age just don't help when the gameplay get really bad in comparison to some of the newer games.)
