The legendary edition doesn't have creation club so it doesn't get updated every time something gets added to the creation club and doesn't break mods. It also has many more compatible mods than the special edition.
By now, most of the frequently installed mods that people use for Oldrim have been ported to SSE. I was skeptical as well when SSE came out, but after the release of SKSE64, I basically use the same mods I used with the LE. And my modded SSE runs way more stable for me, haven't had a crash in months, which is probably due to my computer - I don't have the best system (FX-6300, R9 270X), and too many mods in Oldrim didn't work out well for me (around 60 active mods was often problematic), while for SSE, it works fine.
