Description

After entering giveaway after giveaway of this game and losing every time, I finally decided to just budget my money buy it. Came with an extra copy, so I decided to do a quick giveaway for contributors. :) Hope the winner enjoys the game as much as I have been! It's a shockingly difficult game.

No need for thanks. Instead, ask me anything you've always wanted to know about game art creation and I'll see if I can answer. ^_^

thanks

How much freedom are you given on early art creation? I mean, are you just given a few really basic criteria to fill so you can go wild, or are styles pretty well defined for you before you even start (i.e. do the devs maybe also give you some of their own art to work from)?
I've always wondered how the ball even gets rolling in things like this. In almost any work, the beginning is the hardest part!

That really depends on the particular artist's role and the initial game idea itself. For example, for bigger games, a lot of the "grunt work" artists aren't even hired or brought in on a project until everything is set with the publisher so they don't really get much of a say in the art style. Art directors are usually given freedom when it comes to defining the game's style, but that depends on how solidified the game's design is. If one of the main components of the design is a cartoon style, the art director obviously won't be able to go with a realistic art style. :P

A lot of it goes on a game-by-game basis, but in general, the process usually goes something like this: There's a clear idea for the general art style, the art director and concept artists (if the company is large enough for such) work out the details, and then the general artists create assets based on those concepts.

A little secret though, publishers can ask (and if stubborn enough, can demand) for things to be changed at any time... Good or bad as that may turn out to be. :P

Thanks for the giveaway, Metroidfreak! Though I can't think of a question for you right now. But I wish I could, since that sort of thing is very interesting to me. ^-^ Do you have a website where you talk about it? If not, you could always throw a few facts my way. That'd be wonderful!

Sadly, no. I have my own portfolio website and tumblr blog, but a lot of that is just showing off my work. I'd love to write more for people, but it's hard to find time.

Oh boy, do I understand that! Time is one thing that we'll never have enough of.
No biggie. ^^

Could you share your sites so I can see some of your work? That'd be great!

which do you like more, 2D or 3D, and which is more valuable as a career goal?

I prefer 3D. :)

And neither. :P There's so many options and factors to consider it's hard to pick one as more valuable. 2D artists can work on everything from 2D games to concept art while 3D artists (obviously) create assets for 3D games (whether those be high-budget games or mobile games with low poly models).
