An excerpt from Shantaram... one of the few books that I own, and it holds a bookmark between its pages for reasons that I won't go into, but I'm looking forward to removing it someday. :)

“Sooner or later, fate puts us together with all the people, one by one, who show us what we could, and shouldn’t, let ourselves become. Sooner or later we meet the drunkard, the waster, the betrayer, the ruthless mind, and the hate-filled heart. But fate loads the dice, of course, because we usually find ourselves loving or pitying almost all of those people. And it’s impossible to despise someone you honestly pity, and to shun someone you truly love.”

“If you're going to try, go all the way. Otherwise, don't even start. This could mean losing girlfriends, wives, relatives and maybe even your mind. It could mean not eating for three or four days. It could mean freezing on a park bench. It could mean jail. It could mean derision. It could mean mockery--isolation. Isolation is the gift. All the others are a test of your endurance, of how much you really want to do it. And, you'll do it, despite rejection and the worst odds. And it will be better than anything else you can imagine. If you're going to try, go all the way. There is no other feeling like that. You will be alone with the gods, and the nights will flame with fire. You will ride life straight to perfect laughter. It's the only good fight there is.”

Guardians of the Flame by Joel Rosenberg

Its one of the few book series I really get into and can finish the first couple of books in just a few hours each. After book 5 its not as good but the first part of the series is very entertaining, least to me.

Recently? I cannot recommend I Kill Giants by Joe Kelly quite enough.
Long term, I'd have to count William Goldman's Princess Bride as one of my all time favorites. It's just as good as the movie (which is weird to say).

I heard that "In Hero Years, I'm Dead" by Michael Stackpole is pretty good.

Short stories wise, right now I would say my favorite is: The Ones Who Walk Away from Omelas by Ursula K. Le Guin. I also love Bradbury's short stories. Gaiman is pretty good too. Still, I must admit I prefer reading novels over short stories.
