Unavowed is basically a spin-off of Blackwell series, it happens after the events of Blackwell Epiphany and features some characters we've met before. And as each game from Blackwell Series was better than a previous one, this one is even better than Blackwell Epiphany; Dave Gilbert is an extremely gifted person, and he continues to develop as a writer.
It doesn't really matter. The only important connection is that one of the members of our team is an NPC in Blackwell Epiphany, but you'll do perfectly fine without knowing her backstory. Still, I'd recommend playing Blackwell series anyway - just because they are awesome (don't be dissuaded by simplicity of the first couple of games).

Do you need to play through the Blackwell series first, before playing Unavowed? Or does it not matter?

I plan to at some point, as I've really liked Wadjet Eye's other games. Just need to somehow find the time - that's the hard part. :)
