Was this given away free somewhere? I didn't see it...

Yep. Alienware Arena is giving away 1000 keys per day this week. Try to snatch one tomorrow! :)

Well I'm not sure if that makes it a free game. it's still a paid game.

... that people can get for free. It's no different than IndieGala's giveaways. Speaking of IG, Frozen Hearth is up for grab on their site.

This game is from Alienware but is limited and not everyone has a chance win. Thanks.

It's still a free game. And 5000 keys is a lot of keys. I sure hope mods will do something about it. I'm really tired of seeing people creating GA's for games they got for free. Giving people a chance to own this game is a nice gesture, sure, but you are still breaking the rules.

Naza, are you one of those people that call the PGA officials when you see a golfer commit a rules violation on TV? Technically, the creator of this might be breaking the letter of the rule, but I think he's obeying the spirit of it just fine.

Of course not. But there's a reason why there's such a rule and that reason is contributor levels. I would be perfectly fine with people gifting games they got free of charge if they don't receive (full) CV for them. Otherwise, that'd simply be unfair to those who actually shed money for the games they're giving away.

Then every game here in any GA is a "free game" since some people can get them for free.
If there's only 1000 keys, or even 10000 keys, it's not a free game. It's a paid game with a limited giveaway where many people won't be able to get their copy. That's the distinction.
You'd have a point if there were just an absurd amount of keys, like over a million, enough for everyone who wanted it, but I still think it technically wouldn't be free.

I still have a point because of the contributor levels. That's why there's a rule forbidding people to gift games they didn't shed a single penny for.
When a gazillion of keys are given away, like it's the case with IndieGala, the games will usually be removed from the list so people can't create GA's for them. For a game like Sky Mercenaries, sure, the keys are limited but it's still considered a free game. There have been talks about not allowing a CV increase for those type of giveaways and, yes, I do hope this will be implemented.
