I just learned why pirate captains dressed so fancy, they used long coats, silk shirts, colorful hats and lots of jewelry because it was forbidden to do so!
There were laws at the time saying that only people from the nobility were allowed to use fancy dresses, sometimes under the pretense that the "lower class" would just waste all their money on bling leading to economic collapse, but mostly so they can tell each other apart with just a glance.
