I'm a fan of a few different ones. I like Banished, Aven Colony and Cities: Skylines if we're talking newer titles. But my all time favorites is probably some of the ones from Impressions Games. Pharaoh, Zeus and Emperor. Don't blacklist me, but I also did like SimCity 5, although I did agree with most of what people were complaining about on that one.

I'm only getting back into city builders myself, but I loved playing them as a kid/teenager in the late 90s/early 2000s - I used to play the old Sim City games and Age of Empires (was that a city builder, or strategy game? not sure...). I also liked the first Roller Coaster Tycoon, which is somewhat like a city builder. In the last month I started playing Tropico 4 and I've been enjoying it. I'm going to beat the campaign without any of the expansions, then try the expansion campaigns. I also have my eye on Cities: Skyline and the Cities in Motion games.

Thanks for the recommendations, this is useful since I've been out of the genre for nearly 20 years (!). I've never heard of Settlers 4 or openTTD, but they look interesting. I'll have to check them out. :)

I used to love Sim City as a kid! I thought Cities in Motion 1 was great in theory - but clunky. The Tropico series is awesome, and I'm working on 100%ing Banished.
