I registered with a valid email, so I don't know about that. But once I learned that I could just paste the HB gift link into the CDKey field when creating a giveaway, and Humble Bundle would take care of the rest, I started doing that and stopped emailing people myself. It's easier, it doesn't end up in someone's spam filter, and that way SG tracks that the link was sent and viewed.
