I do understand the idea behind it. It's a way to support the devs, which I'm fine.

I think of doing it because I understand the vision. Is it rightfully labeled? NO!

Do people need to send him death treats and be disrespectful in comments? ABSOLUTELY NOT.

Yeah. Not good at all how the community responded. Steam members can be one of the hardest crowds to please.

All this hate made me wanna help the dev. I don't even use the software that much as I tend to forget or find other ways to make my games work on Ultrawide. I'm willing to give more attention to this software going forward and support it if it needs it.

Isn't the app actually free outside of steam?

It is, on GitHub, but the Steam version is like a Donation platform where if you want it there, you just pay for it. Helps development for the project.

That is the older release without the dark mode.

The app is literally free on github, including the dark mode. Currently you have to compile the latest release yourself from the source code but an installer will be added in about a week as well. So buying/paying is optional and for convenience only.

To be fair you can legitimately get it for free on https://github.com/Codeusa/Borderless-Gaming/releases and so the author is just looking to get some funds to help continue making it better as new technologies come along.

I'd advise buying it on Steam and letting them get it if you have it.

That said, accessibility shouldn't be extra and the fact that it's double the price of the base 'game' is just a joke. Find a middle ground and leave it there for everyone to access.

Many people in the software business forgot the meaning of the term "feature complete". Instead of trying to squeeze customers in exchange for a negligible improvement it would have been a better move to raise price for BG due to inflation and thus higher costs.

I think the dev addressed that by saying that he doesn't want to do it, therefore came with the plan of a DLC.

Free app and an alternative option to support the dev. What a horrible future. And what a horrible dev who refuses to waste his time with some few clowns.

I don't understand. The outrage is on steam. The place where people paid money to use the program.
So they paid money to devs even though the app is free. Is that not supporting the dev?
You can even see there is a 9 years old dlc called "donation #1"? Just make a donation #2 dlc then?

Sure, he could have done that. But I don't see how it's problematic to copy some files from GitHub into a folder if dark mode is oh so essential for some people.

He could have handled it differently but whining about a horrific future for gaming because of this is just nuts.

People love dark mode. For example, there is a "Does this website has any dark mode??" help post on steamgifts made 12 hours ago. Funnily enough, someone made one 4 years ago on github.

Here is also a weird thing:
It has a dlc called "Borderless Gaming - Donation #1" released in 2015 which says "This downloadable content is used for donation purposes only and does not actually add anything to Borderless Gaming".
So why make a new "dlc" with a feature?
Make a new dlc called "Donation #2" or some shit and nothing changes. He knew what he was doing with making a dlc for dark mode.
It's not relevant if it free on github.People paid for it on steam to use it. They are already supporting the dev.

People pay to use the app which is given free somewhere else. What more support could you want as a dev? Just start patreon then and leave the app feature as it is.

The whole situation is a double edge sword at this point. I'm on the fence of both the dev and the community. Both are right and wrong.

Well - I get your point. But on the other hand - if you want author to do more stuff - you have to feed him xD
People will rather avoid buying dlc that just support the author.

I don't understand any of this, but doesn't the dev say under the newspost that you can just get the dark mode for free from their website.
Seems like the only issue is that the game on Steam would require you to get the DLC for achievement completion, as far as I can tell.

Yes, and we know that if you can get anything on Steam, people would get it.

I mean we have OBS. Give us Spotify, YouTube, and other stuff and people would eat it up.

Actually, it wouldn't be bad to have Streaming Services there too, so you can watch as you do on other consoles if you connect it to your TV or just want to watch in bed.

Achievements??? Why does an app have cheevos and trading cards....

It's a free program, no one has to buy it unless you want to support the dev. I don't understand why people went apeshit over this. You can buy free programs on Steam to support the devs, you don't have to use them on Steam. There are many devs doing this. Of course it's better to directly make a donation but it's fine if you want to do this on Steam. I bought Aseprite on Steam but I can pull it from AUR for free.

Seems more like a communication problem more so than anything else. If the DLC was called "Donation" like the first one was, and just happened to included dark mode, I doubt many would even notice or be upset about it.
