Games: The Talos Principle + The Witness
Level: 3+
Region Restrictions: No
Time: Until 24th December
Hints: 1) all you need for solving this is to know the English alphabet
2) actually, all lines are of the same length
Puzzle:

C is the third letter of the alphabet.
The eleventh letter on this line is the N.
Letter A takes the ninth spot in here.
Do not look for any help on eighteenth line.
This is just as short as line fifteen is.
Try to read this quickly sixteen times.
I made more than ten puzzles for SG.
I hope for at least seventeen solves here.
This is solvable in under six days.
I created it in less than eight hours.
You can win at most two great games.
I wonder who works it out first of all.
Line seven isn’t shorter than this is.
Nor is four any bit longer than this.
Possibly fifth line brings insight.
Text here or line twelve has no import.
You adjust line fourteen if it is untrue.
Tough to say what is number thirteen for.

Edit: I realized the second line was a bit misleading, breaking the true concept of the puzzle, therefore I adjusted it

Solution: A great solution was posted at the Witness giveaway

I guess the great SG puzzle community is really dead for good. Let's try it with a hint.

Would it violate the rules, if I posted my thoughts so far (not solved yet) here on the comment section, or would you mind? Still zero entries so far, do the GAs have.

Sure, since so few people are trying, we can make it something like a community puzzle. Have at least some fun. But try to be a bit obscure, so that others stiil need to put some thought into it.

Personally I think I can make sense of the two hints, the second one most of all (on the 1st one I'm still not entirely sure).
Seems like now that I'm seeing what I'm seeing I'd need something that would help me pick the right ones. I assumed I had what I needed but I don't get anything that makes sense to my single braincell at the moment, I'm using them in the wrong way most likely. I'm trying to remain as vague as possible sorry.
I have the feeling the answer is right there looking at me, but I'm overthinking things as usual.
(All this assuming I'm on the right path, which is a big guess 😅)

Let me ask this: Did you manage to make all lines have the same length?

Comment has been collapsed.

I am also still looking now and then into it and really spend quite some time figuring out how to solve this. So I do not think nobody is trying.

As posted above I have found some patterns, but couldn't solve the other "half". I also did not yet solve the "same length" problem even though I thought about it even before the hint was there since you could somewhat understand that from the riddle itself.

Let's see if I can make it. I just wanted to let you know, we are here we are trying. Puzzle community still present, do not be frustrated. But it seams to be a though challenge.

And I really appreciate you making this puzzle. The puzzle community can only life if it gets something to eat ☺️.

Thanks. I made a slight adjustment to the puzzle which might help you with the "same length" problem.

Nice, I believe that is the hardest part of the puzzle. Now, you need to pick the right ones, as you said, but also arrange them in the correct order..

I can't confidently narrow it down to just 5 characters at the moment, and if more are actually needed, I have a few possibilites at hand with 7, 9 or 18, but even rearranging them in the few logic ways I could think of, I don't get anything that works.
I have to think more about it.

Edit: nevermind, I solved it 🤣

I do not have much time at the moment since Christmas stuff already takes a lot of time.

But I had a few minutes to look into it and now managed to solve the "same length" thing. Also assume I have an order. And also I might have "the right ones" (probably not since it does not work out). Also I yet do not see the benefit of having them on same length.

Hope to have some more time before end of puzzle.

If the same length equals the length of the English alphabet, there should be a benefit:-)

if this is true then the second line is false, no?

I believe it isn't: if you count letters, the eleventh one is N, isn't it?

What progress have you made so far?

Comment has been collapsed.

Well i do not think i have made any progress but some of the things i tried and thought it was a dead end are:
Adjusting the line order as the numbers they contain.
Finding the alphabet equivalent of the numbers in the lines and trying to get a code from there.
Sorting the lines as true/false as the information it contains.
Finding the letter corresponding to the number in the line.
After the hint 2, adjusting the lines to be exact same length.
And maybe some more things that i dont remember. But they all feels like useless.

I did exactly the same.

As for the same length, try to look at it this way: is there anything that you can find in all the sentences and that is of varied length? Also: how long should the lines probably be when you consider the first hint?

A very good brain-teaser. And looking at it as a whole I can see it's really well built.
I wouldn't have solved it without the hints, though.
Thanks! ;)

How many characters does the solution have? And if we have to replace something with something, should the second something be lowercase or uppercase?

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

The final solution has five characters. But to decide lowercase and uppercase you would need more... approximately eighteen ;-)

I've been trying to solve it since the beginning. I've tried everything. And without the hints and after the hints, I tried to find something with 18 characters that makes at least some sense. I've searched in all directions (and diagonally) and with various line arrangements. I don't know what else to try.

Permalink

Hm, I'm not sure I understant clearly... Each line (or sentence) should give you one character but they are not arranged in a straight line or any similar way, so you will not need any "directions".
