Single player: Crysis (not Crysis 2). Multiplayer: Battlefield: Bad Company 2 (just because it's the only Battlefield game I have. IMO Battlefield is way better than COD).

Quake 3 Arena. Anyone saying anything else is wrong, simple as that.

Unreal Tournament is acceptable as well, I guess.

Why do older gamers always think that the best shooter ever has to be something old enough to grow a beard? They always mention some game that brings back memories of internet cafe LAN matches. Don't you get, that you were just younger then, and life simply seems to suck more when you grow up? You're not going to get those years back you know.

I like how you're just assuming everyone who doesn't share your opinion must be running entirely on nostalgia. Because the opinion of someone like you, who probably hasn't even played any of these "bearded" games let alone has the experience to compare them to more modern offerings, is so much more valid than mine, amirite? ಠ_ಠ

Q3A is the best because it focuses on pure player skill in stead of perks and classes. Because it focuses on map control in stead of killstreaks. Because it focuses on lightning fast gameplay in stead of fancy explosions. Because it focuses on no-holds-barred competitive play in stead of ranks and achievements. Because it doesn't clutter your UI with useless crap. Because it only tries (and succeeds) to be a good shooter in stead of trying (and failing) to be funny or cool or meaningful or anything else completely extraneous to a good competitive shooter.

It's not better because it's older, it's better because it has a more pure and uncompromising design philosophy than literally any shooter on the market today.

You were way quicker to put me in a category than I was with you (at least I had a reason to assume you're an older gamer - no youngster would have picked Quake) and, as it is often the case, you're completely wrong about me. I have played the original Quake when it came out and tried its followers as well. But when Half-Life, using basically the same technology, showed how much more an FPS could be than just collecting frags I turned myself around. Just because, as kids, we were stupid enough to think a primitive deathmatch is the next world wonder, doesn't mean the industry hasn't come up with something better along the way. After all, look where the HL series is now, and where is Quake, or any other id franchise for that matter. There's a reason, why that old school approach to gaming is outdated now.

As a story, Half-Life is better, since Q3 didn't have much of a story.
As a single-player experience, Half-Life is better, since Q3's singleplayer was just a training mode for newbies.
But as a pure shooter, Quake 3 is miles ahead of Half-Life, and that's what it's all about.

Look at where the HL series is now compared to Q3A? The original HL is almost completely irrelevant as anything more than a building block for better mods/games, and the sequel isn't much different. That's the thing with singleplayer games - you can choose to replay them every now and then if you're a huge fan, but there's never any challenge to it to keep things spiced up. Meanwhile, Q3A is still one of the most popular competitive games in the genre (along with other classics like Unreal Tournament and Counterstrike) and thanks to gamer-focused (as opposed to purely consumer-focused) initiatives like Quake Live is still a very popular multiplayer game.

And yes, there is indeed a reason this approach is considered outdated now. That reason is that the current gamer can't handle these kind of uncompromising games. There are no bells and whistles, no achievements to earn of gamerscore to raise, no classes to buy, no perks to unlock, and the graphics are extremely basic compared to modern shooters. Today's market is a market for console shooters, Call of Duty clones, plodding cover-based gameplay, achievements, cinematic storytelling, quickscopes and ironsights, maps and indicators, and graphics über alles. No big developer is interested in making the next Q3 or UT because the average modern gamer wouldn't be able to keep up with it, and all the big names do is cater to the average. Call of Duty is what the masses want so Call of Duty is what the masses get. There are attempts at capturing that old-school feeling every now and then (Painkiller was a good one - I didn't care much for the singleplayer but the multiplayer was solid as a rock), but none have really surpassed Q3A.

You can bitch and moan about how outdated games like Quake are, but that isn't any kind of argument. I get it, you like it when you're told a story and when you don't have to compete with real people. That's perfectly valid. I'm not trying to tell you you're wrong for enjoying Half-Life. I'm just telling you that you're wrong for saying Half-Life is a better shooter.

Singleplayer: System Shock 2
It was far ahead of its time and is still ahead most modern games. My only doubt is, if it is fair to call it an FPS.

Multiplayer: UT99
Absolute classic. Highly variable by all its mods and mutators. The weapons were clever and not nearly as generic as they seemed. The maps were superb with many goodies.

Team Multiplayer: Team Fortress 2
So many tactical possibilities. The only problem is, that you sometimes have to remind your teammates to actually play instead of trade hats. It doesn't take itself too serious, which I think is great among all those rager-mp-games.

I have to say, in terms of multiplayer, Resistance: Fall of Man was easily my favorite.
The single player, while fun, was just alright... nothing special.
But the multiplayer was pretty much the best fps I ever played.

For the record I hate FPS games, but Half Life is an exception. Before that, the last one I really liked was the first Quake.
