I've just started to play Lone Survivor and in the first 10min I got really scared.. I remember when I was 12 or smth I played scary games but I never got so scared that i would turn off the game. So could it be that because I haven't been playing scary games for YEARS (except F.E.A.R but I had a friend sitting by my side while I was playing it) that I'm just not used to them anymore? Or maybe it's because I'm playing with my headphones on?

So either way how do you overcome fear in games?

P.S This only occurs with games i have no problem watching scary movies or other stuff

And then you take drugs made from a giant space worm, right?

That's a pretty crucial step.

Face your fears head on and watch scary movies. You'll be desensitized in no time. Then play the hardest difficulty.

Actually I have no problem with scary movies in fact that is my favourite genre this problem accurs only with games! Dont know why..

Maybe its cuz you're getting into it, you cant into movies. But Jeeeeez Lone Survivor? It isnt even first-person game. O_o and after all, isnt being scared a reason for playing scary games?

This! I`m sorry but if you get scared so easily you should stop playing games that are aimed at people who want to get scared.

A good way to overcome fear is through controlled and repeated exposure. This is not a fun method, but it is very effective.
Alternatively, consider not playing games that are too scary ;)

Brightness at 100%, lights on, headphones off, and play happy music.

^ Agree. That should help. Though tbh, I never got scared of a game to the extend that I couldn't play any further.

If you take a timeout, you can collect yourself, remove yourself from the game scenario and remember it is a game. It may not last for very long, when you start playing again, but it might help a bit.

When I played the never ending staircase I listened to and sang (chanted? I don't know it was so loud I couldn't hear myself anyway) along to the Skyrim theme tune really loudly to keep myself amped.
The trick is to occupy most of your mind on something else unrelated while only a bit pays attention to the actual game.

Lol, I'm not saying there aren't moments in games that give you a fright but getting scared to the point of asking for help?? don't think I'm the one with masculinity issues here. I'm not angry about my life either, I have a rewarding job, a loving girlfriend, a nice house and I'm in a good place right now, couldnt ask for more really so go and try to troll somebody a little more gullible if that's what gets you off.

Lol I'm not looking for help I'm looking for suggestions it's not like im never going to finish that game. I turned off the game and just asked how others deal with it. The problem that I wrote is that I didn't had these problems when I was a kid.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

You didn't have those problems as a kid because you had no perception as to the real meaning of fear, kids are fearless until they learn what scares them. How to deal with it? it's only a game not real so the fear is irrational.

Face it balls-on. There was a time when I was afraid to play Left 4 Dead alone at night, I had to have lights on. Now no problem. Still have some issues with Amnesia and some other games though, even if GF's right next to me, but I'm slowly working on it xD

hmm have to start playing these kind of games more often as I'm usually playing some rpg's tbh only single player games do this to me because L4D and Killing Floor isn't scary at all for me. The problem is that when I was a kid I never had any sort of problems playing horror games. I guess your right just have to play more of these games :)

I don't, that's why I play these games. It's not easy to get that scared, so I enjoy it. Amnesia ❤

Although if you're scared in real life, stand up to it. It's usually not that bad as you expect and you always look like a BAMF :)

Lone Survivor wasn't scary in the slightest IMO, but if the game is scaring you that's a good thing. It's so hard to find a game that can do that these days.

Just laugh at it =D Or you can find the 3d models of monster of your game for Gmod and mock them like I did with Amnesia zombies, i could kill them in the game so I mocked them in Gmod :3

Well games have the characteristic of being immersive, maybe it's the fact that you get into it really hard.... try to play a scary game in a large tv, sitting on a couch, with your headphones on, perhaps that change of environment can help you step away a bit from that immersion and later on help you overcome that..... Just an idea.
