You can buy a physical version from their store, and you receive the game, at launch, on a USB Stick.

that's only the starter tool, most assets will be downloaded on first start.
It would be great if they sold a blu-ray version

Well, d'uh. Doesn't matter what game it is, as the game will receive countless patches, updates and expansions. Talking about the file size is pretty moot. It may eventually surpass 100GB anyway. It's an online game. Comes with the territory.

Yeah, some people have incredibly poor Internet speed or limited download cap. If you have a PC capable of running this game the way it deserves to be run and buy into it, I'd say you should also be able to deal with the Internet requirements.

People with Internet Caps would find this to be a problem. Also, I recall seeing computers listed in flyers a few months ago that only had a 120GB SSD despite being classed as gaming machines.

They didn't have a secondary drive listed though. Mind you I didn't dig deeper than seeing the ad, I just remembered thinking it was odd to be so limited in a gaming machine. You'd think they would have listed the second hard drive if it had one though.

Which was my point. There's enough reasons not looking forward to SC already with their development cycle, now even the download is a bummer. I got 50Mbps and don't even consider it because downloading a game for hours and every damn patch is gonna be another hour. Game crashes? "Can you redownload it please?" Terrible thought at that size. They really need to make a streaming client. I'd rather have placeholders for the first two days. Imagine the launch day...

You'd think they'd be smart enough to implement the download using BitTorrent like Blizzard has done with WoW.

P2P doesn't solve the problem if having a huge download every time they decide to patch. It needs a streaming client.

I'm paying $85 for 30/1.5 and I would normally get h 120 Gb monthly cap. However, the data cap is lifted when you also subscribe to their digital TV package. (Add another $35 for their base package).

And that's both the fastest and cheapest Internet provider I can currently get.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Depends on how much you are ready to spend. When I was working in India, what I saw was the local ISP were charging so much for high speed unlimited bandwidth that most people make do with broadband connections with 80GB data caps. Other wise you have to spend a lot of money for those Fiber optic unlimited net connection.

First world internet speeds.

Try visiting rural New Zealand. Looks like I'm going to have to bequeath Star Citizen to my kids, as by the time this sucker has downloaded, I'll be boring care home staff with lurid tales of the Great War, and explaining how, back in my day, chasing wooden hoops around the farmyard qualified as "next gen" entertainment.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Not surprising actually considering the detail that goes into each model.

A typical vehicle in any game has around 2 maybe 3 layers of textures. In Star Citizen there's an average of 5 to 6, not including decals and paint jobs.

I mean is there also an article or something online that says the same thing you are saying? Since you made the claim that other games have less layers and the this one has more.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

If he's extracting game files, it's a pretty safe assumption that he's extracted files from other games as well...

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Yes, but a source would help his claim and help others understand the problem at hand.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Help his claim? Maybe. Help others understand? Not really. If people understand what texture layers are to begin with, then his "claim" (air quotes because it's not really outlandish enough to be called a claim) is fairly basic. If they don't, then a thread showing the common texture layer count isn't going to help them.

I can support the fact that you don't find much publicized work about modding though.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

I mean that he could verify if the bloated size was just because of the layers and not something else and if so what else is causing a large size.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Unless you do modding you will rarely hear about it. Closest they've talked about it was a video with Dan Tracy. Journalists are not interested (or are far too lazy) to ask these questions cause they will know very little about what it means.

Extract textures from some War Thunder, DCS World, IL-2 Sturmovik or any other game which uses highly detailed vehicles (both interiour and exteriour) and they have far fewer texture layers.

So in short extract the game files and see for yourself.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Already said I don't have the game files. Since you do modding you should have threads and discussions about this sort of discussion right?, if you could post that it would be very helpful.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

I don't need a source if I've offered to show you and explain why (and already stated where to go look and compare). The discussions are left on dev threads which are not accessible to the general public and for often good reason (source code in wrong hands results in rampant cheating).

Now it will take time but I can do a side by side comparrison of these games texture files and explain the difference if you really want.

Depends if it's bloated cause it's unoptimized (Wolfenstein, Watchdogs, Titanfall etc) or because it has fuckloads of content (NeuroTec mod or Forgotten Hope mod).

Well a large file size is not always indicative of more content, so I guess we will have to wait and see, but I think this is a bad sign.

Creating a crapton of data and delivering it via old fashioned downloads is technologically backwards and games have done that better long ago. Technologically advanced would be means of asset reusage without removing depth or calculations like shaders and maps instead of layering, or improved compression.

Guess what, that's exactly what they wanna do. They just didn't get to it, yet.
People need to relax and just wait for the finished product, before they start bashing it.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

They are developing a video game and let you be part of it, during it's development by sharing information, alpha builds, etc.
Other companies don't reveal anything till release, no demos, no nothing. if the game sucks, fine bash it.
Just give them a change, let them finish a version they call stable release and then judge that.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

I never said I wanted to. You just called it their USP to let me be part of it while all I get is stupid hyped tech demos and the hilarious development cycle accompanied by an army of fanboys for a product they won't have any stake in. This product is the rise and maybe the fall of crowd funding. This game might as well only run on a supercollider and they wouldn't need to care, they got paid on a promise with no need to deliver. So I'll judge on what I see and what I see, so far, is nothing except shortcomings and promises.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

sounds like you want it all and you want it now. there's no release date and unless they say this is the stable release, everything is under development and has to be judged as such.

you want compression for patches, they say they didn't have time, yet.
you say "wanna do" is all they have delivered to date, well they delivered the hangar module and the arena commander.

and they are working on the fps, campaign and persistent universe, it just takes time.
