I live in the southern US and stayed near a lake for the first trip, then stayed at Lookout Mountain in Tennesse for the other trip.

Oh, I had no idea Netherlands (or at least your part) didn't have much mountains. I've only been to Austria and Czechia in the EU, so I'm not too familiar with geography over there. I also live not far from the southern start of the Appalachian mountain range which is huge and lovely, stretching across many of the Eastern states.

OMG, this is classic. I have teenagers and...yeah, this is pretty much on-point. :D

Happy Cakeday!
and some new PC hardware.
Also, a question for ya if you don't mind... assuming you've assembled those components and aren't waiting for xmas first. I was recently looking at upgrading my core components and also interested in a Ryzen 5000 which I see pictured. I had been reading some stuff about motherboards needing a BIOS update before they would work with the Ryzen 5000...Most of the mobos I looked at said it was "supported" but in the fine print it would indeed say something about needing a BIOS update first. I'm more partial to ASUS and Gigabyte mobos (have had some really annoying issues with MSI in the past, even though I really like their physical LEDs/on-board controls).
As this would be my first cpu on the AM4 socket types and all of my existing CPUs are for the older (and from what I understand non-backwards compatible) AM3+ sockets.... So I was just wondering if the Ryzen 5000 worked for you out-of-the-box (at least enough to install BIOS updates) etc? Or did you have to use an older spare Ryzen CPU first to get past the BIOS updates?
Edit: I'm fine with answers from any who might be knowledgeable about this, not just OP. But not generally an Intel kind of guy :-)

Correct.

I had an ASUS mobo for 7 years that handled my 3570K, and my new one is a ROG STRIX B-550F coupled with my 5600X.

Either you have to ensure that you have a mobo feature called BIOS Flashback that will accept a BIOS update via USB drive without actually booting up (PSU must have power tho), you would have to get an older Ryzen CPU, or there are some PC shops that can do this (presumably with a spare older CPU) like Microcenter for just ~$30. AMD does have a loaner program for the latter. My mobo happened to support BIOS flashback, and its worked great for 3 BIOS updates, beta and non beta.
I only keep up on PC hardware news around the time I upgrade, then I go back into hiding so to speak until I need another major upgrade.

Awesome! thanks for the detailed feedback.
Hadn't been aware of the flashback feature so will keep an eye out for that and possibly look into the AMD loaner program as well... there is a micocenter in my area but is a bit of a drive and even with reduced traffic due to covid, would still be kind of a pain. still good to know about in case the other options don't pan out tho.

Thanks, yeah I wanted to flex my 1440p/165 Hz monitor, which I couldn't do that as much with my GTX 1060 unless its an older game or I turn down some graphics settings. I used to be on a 720p TV for several years, lol.

💙 Yes, I am so happy to not be CPU bound and get the most out of my 1440p/165 Hz monitor

I saw the writing on the wall when I started seeing my 3570K as near or at minimum spec for some newer games, and Fallout 4 would show my CPU occasionally pegged at 100% in the city. Its probably for the best that I haven't played any larger scale management games this year that would bring the FPS to a crawl when more zoomed out on a map.

I found this lovely community 2 years ago. In the second half of this year, I haven't been as active here because 2020 is 2Dark and my job became more challenging, but I've made the best of it with family, some nice vacations, some games, and some new PC hardware.
Thanks for being awesome!
