As you might or might not have seen, both steam controller and steam link are currently on -30% discount. Seems like a good chance to give good use of the steam wallet profits from card farming.

I've been reading steam link reviews and there seems to be people complaining about it's bad perform. My main question is:

  • Is wireless a real option?

  • If wireless doesn't really work well, what's the point of having a long wire from PC to living room for the steam controller? Would you not be better off with the hdmi cable straight from PC to TV?

I think it greatly dependes on your Internet connection, I think it will always have issues for online multiplayer though.

I don't have experience with the steam link itself but with similar solutions.
First I would avoid a wireless connection.
Second of course there is a huge difference between an ethernet connection and a hdmi-cable.

  • it allows communication in both directions -> keyboard, mouse, controller whatever inputs
  • in my case I have ethernet in the whole building on all floors....I have even plugs in the kitchen and bath, and outside at the pergola renovated the house 2008 and tought....so what why not . This is very convient.....a hdmi -cable of 10,20 or 30 meters going from pc-x to tv-y is not...and of course I don't have to care about a direct connection....a network is a network is a network

I know it's not the point, but HDMI is also bidirectional.

of course you are right....but we need a tv and a pc + the right gfx-card that would support any kind of usb via tv...via hdmi...via gfx-card.......;-)

  1. I have an AC1750 router and can run the Steam Link pretty well on the 5GHz band. Latency is the biggest factor in my experience. Rocket League is terrible to play that way, but e.g. Shadow of Mordor was pleasant enough. Certainly would be better wired. Obviously bandwidth will depend on where your router is located and what kind of materials the signals will have to go through, so people will have wildly different experiences.

  2. The point would be that it is one cable, as the Link has both USB ports and bluetooth. I have a Steam controller, a 360 controller and a bluetooth keyboard connected myself. Oh, and ethernet is sometimes installed in buildings, which HDMI and USB tend not to be. Then there's also signal degradation with distance, which is a problem for video cables whereas network ones are better equipped to handle distances over 55ft or so.
