I disabled message notifications in the top navigation bar for the moment. We're having some server issues as our database continues to grow in size rapidly, and this may help to reduce load time as I look into options available to us.

I vote for message notification being an option.

I had made a post suggesting this very feature and others were in agreement. Hopefully it becomes an option.

So is the two problem's I've been having, related to this? Any page loading is a bit slow and I can barely enter giveaways. After 20 tries or so I can do it, but other times it's just stuck on trying to enter.

Can I piggyback my questionto this thread....do messages disappear after a while? I had over 100 in there and now theres only a couple dozen and I know I didn't delete any.
TIA.

If you can fix it in some hours I think it's better to close the site for maintenance and/or freeze giveaways.

why the change at the entered giveaways?it was way better the way it was.now it's harder to check a ga you entered 3-4 weeks before and way harder to check all your courent entered giveaway, for example i tend to leave a giveaway if the entries are way too many and now i have to check too many pages to view them.

just a suggestion, but wouldn't it help to delete old threads/messages form discussions?

there are 82k uncategorized threads that are clogging up the database and are mostly useless.
it's just a matter of weighting options. what's more important, having 82k threads older than 1 year or a more responsive db?

Sir, may I recommend some suggestions.

There are currently 104,761. I am betting over 95,000 of which probably hasn't been active in over a week, the majority of which probably months.

I would say that after a thread has gone 7 days without any input, have it automatically removed from the data base as it is old and ran it's course. That would probably recover a great deal of space.

Also, the same could be said for users records of previous wins and losses except have them go back and remove anything over a year old from the database. Keep the exact number of games accurate but you don't need to have a record of every auction they ever won, created or even lost.

So, just to sum it up.

1) Remove all threads inactive for more than 7 days.
2) Remove the actual lists of auctions won or created after 1 year while preserving the actual numbers.
3) Even though I did not mention this, but delete the records of all auctions over a year old as well as they are no longer needed.

Numbers 2 & 3, you could honestly move up to 6 months pretty safely. That would really cut the cruft off the database with little to no inconvenience to users unless they really like to look up on others to see every single individual giveaway they ever made or won since their account creation, which seems a little stalker-ish to me.

Edit: The threads hit 1 week old after only 5 pages. Everything older than that could very easily be deleted.

I have gone back up to 200 pages and still only at up to 20,000 threads of the over 100,000 posted. This is where the majority of your database has gone.

Well, this might be good idea, but I don't think that killing threads just after one week is good idea. At least month. It would be safer and probablly still would free up some space.

The number of discussions is fairly small. The big tables are the giveaway entries (400 million), user games (100 million), and comments (40 million).

Add a like button to giveaway pages and maybe something similar to the forum to avoid generic bumps/thanks comments.
And maybe remove old giveaway entries. 1 year+. Just save the number of entries.

For what we need who participated on any GA? I would make this:
Winners will be there forever and those that did not win, will be deleted from table after 6 months and just for statistics you can add new column to table with GAs "entries" so we can see how many entries, but will not see these people after 6 months.

400 million rows in table is too much.

I know nothing about technical side of all this, but I will agree that keeping entries from 1 year ago is useless (when site doesn't calculate our estimated win chance). I'd like to know in how many GAs I already have participated (but I don't have to know in which ones exactly).

Hi cg, please tell me you're not using the same database/server for the giveaway entries and the forums/comments O_O

I don't mind if you add more ads to the site if it helps to pay for another dedicated server for giveaways only. 400 million entries sounds like too much.

i also assumed it was the number of threads, but it makes sense the GAs are taking way more space...

well, you know more than us so suggestions will be useless xD

So... when you will turn them on again, will they work backwards, showing replies that were create during this temporary situation?

Try resyncing your account. I had the same problem, but doing that seems to have fixed it.

Make sure you have selected to hide the games you already own here and that you have synced your account since the games were added.

You can keep the notifications turned off forever, I kinda like it that way, but just give us the blacklist/whitelist feature you were talking about! Can't wait to see the numbers :D

I don't know if something extra was made, but for past few weeks "entered GA" page for my entries was generated for more than 45s. Now it generates for 0,4s.

I'd like to keep it that way :D
