Another year, another Steam Replay, another spiders. :)

I still think it's not really accurate. Since according to Steam, I spend most of my time with SRPGs and RTS (+RPG) games, though they're not here for some reason while occasional Isaac made it. Also my driving comes from my brother's playing (also my Windows time apparently), since he cannot play via Steam Family anymore.

Anyway, let's see how's your spiders. Here is mine:

No.
Potatoes would be more accurate.

I feel like my taste in games has been somewhat consistent for the last two or three years, but that "mythology" caught me off guard.

I'm fairly sure they add bullshit "underdog" tags there, so you're baffled and talk about it / share it more.
Most may fit, but I played literally two games with Ninja tag out of 100+, it's impossible that it's in the top 6 tags even time-wise.

I wonder what's the algorithm here. It doesn't make sense time-wise, it doesn't make sense session-wise. Apparently game count doesn't affect it either. It seems they put a couple underdog tag no matter what.

Traditional roguelike and Medieval are kinda accurate as I played Tales of Maj'Eyal and Mount&Blade, but I have no idea what "Naval Combat" and "Destruction" is supposed to be.

Naval Combat appears to be games focusing on ship fighting, but "destruction" is so completely random - I think the idea was "games where you can blow walls and buildings" like Red Faction or Battlefield, but there's also stuff like Carmageddon, Tropico 6, Goat Simulator or Shin Megami Tensei V.

Point and click isn't even showing what i played most.

What i am surprised at is how i went from 11000 achievements to 790, maybe the achievement spam still counted then.
But i also seem to play a lower amount of games (then again i spend 3 months on kingdom hearts on epic).

And on your steam profile you can't even showcase 2022, 2023 and 2024.

Yeah, it doesn't make sense.
There is an additional showcase for Steam Replay on Points Shop. So we can only show 2 at a time it seems. Though for some reason, I cannot select 2023.

Nope, I never used beta client. Why?

Comment has been collapsed.

For me, I can't get my 2022, because of a bug that happened during the beta period with new "Private" feature on the beta client. It very well may just be tied to the private feature and not the beta client. Did you use the new private feature at all?

Comment has been collapsed.

Interesting. I did use private feature for some titles that I cannot delete, like the ones that came in a bundle but they're a demo, endless version, public-beta kind of things. Or for the ones I have deleted but remained as a 100% achievement game. Not for the games I have played in the last few years as least.

Oh yeah the point shop thanks, seems i don't have much left, guess i am not buying enough games anymore.

Anyway 2023 does show for me (you can check my profile), so weird that it doesn't show for you.

No problem!

Yeah, it's weird. It's greyed-out for some reason:

Back when the private feature was in beta there was a bug where games that people on SG were gifting through steam were marked private automatically so I was trying to troubleshoot it with the help of SG support member Delta and there was some bug that occurred with the 2022 replay which basically made the data unavailable and it greyed it out like you see in your pic.

So what you see with the 2023 replay for you may be due to a bug with the private feature.

It's very aggravating. I've contacted steam support and even tried to find a fix for since then. There is a report of something working for some on the steam discussion boards, but in some cases it actually didn't fix the problem and it made it worse. If I remember correctly it removed another year(2023) for someone, so they lost both. I contacted steam suport again once I found the thread and they said that there isn't a fix for the time I contacted them. So with your report there's now 2 years that replays have a bug. I wonder if this bug will show up for anyone this year.

That's a weird bug. We viewed it and even got the badge for it, but cannot use it in the showcase. -_-

However, what I did with the private feature is also recent, definitely not in 2023. So I believe there must be some other (or additional) reason for it. Though I cannot say what it could be.

They probably didn't fix the bug. :)

The graph is showing what you "spent the most time in" for the year. I'm not sure what you mean by it not making sense. The graph is showing me exactly what is stated.

Permalink

For example, this page is 28% RPG, 14% RTS and 16% JRPG, which is my 70% of all my time. They didn't make it to the graph for some reason. While < 3% programming, 2% space sim, 4% action roguelike made it.

Some of the RPGs you played have pirate type characters or something related to that which is why they put them under the "Pirate" unbrella. The 2 Agarest games and Windward alone are 15%, Elite Dangerous is space, but also has pirate elements.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

When I search for "pirates" tag in my library, I see that I have played 3 games with that tag. I spent 78 hours with them. So it kinda makes sense, though I still think it shouldn't be the #1. I don't think they calculate this with including game characters. Only the first Agarest game had a pirate character but it was for only one generation, though it was playable. The percentage might be higher if games have pirate elements beside the tag (I need to check that though) but there needs to be a math here, unless they used a broken AI.

Only space sim I have played is Elite Dangerous, which was ~30 hours. This one definitely doesn't deserve to be in the graph if it's time-wise.

However, one game can have too many tags and obviously some of these tags are indirect tags. If they include every tag without looking if it really represents the game or not, these graphs are possible I guess.

What's a spectacle fighter? Never heard that one before.

Think DMC games and how the combat plays in that series. Combat focused gameplay, where the player is encouraged to learn various different play styles and rewarded for executing multiple combos. Devil May Cry is probably the most popular series in this genre, but there is also Killer is Dead, Bayonetta, and Bujingai if you go retro.

Going over my replay, it seems FF16 and Megaton Musashi are what prompted the tag showing up. They both have elements of spectacle fighters (more so for FF16; Musashi seems like a stretch to me), but there are better picks out there if this type of gameplay is your main priority.

As for the games mentioned, I would recommend playing FF16. Great story, and solid combat. I personally played it with the English VA because I felt it fit better with the game/vibe rather than the Japanese. Megaton Musashi is only worth playing if you only care about the combat. If you watch the trailer and you are 100% sold on the combat alone, then it is worth playing. Otherwise I would recommend passing on it, because the great combat is bogged down by a boring storyline.

Thanks. FF16 is absolutely on my list. But I didn't even touch FF15 in my backlog yet. 😅

On the JRPG side my intention is to continue with the Legend of Heroes series first. At least the second arc should be finished, before I might try another JRPG "on the side".

I'm pretty sure at least 9 of 10 games I play should have a "Narration" tag, but ok, at least it's there. Also, I don't quite understand that part about "Superhero", I think I've only played one superhero game this year (Marvel's Midnight Suns). Maybe that's because of the sheer number of superheroes in that one game? Well, who knows. But they are definitely on point with CRPG :)

On one hand, it does count playtime for spider, so maybe you just played Midnight Suns so much.
On the other, maybe filter your library for tag "superhero", maybe you'll see some surprise games there (like me seeing bunch of strategy games under "top-down").

I'm kinda dissapointed that the "Fighting" part will decrease going forward, because the only 2 fighting games still keeping me motivated to play; their latest patches send them to hell: Dragon Ball Fighterz and Guilty Gear Strive. And I'm still shocked "dwarf" is a metric XD

5 looks "yeah, possible", 6th one - "top-down" was a surprise, but then I searched my library for "top-down" tag and noticed games like Cartel Tycoon, Hard West 2 or Tropico 6 and yeah, guess that explains that.

But more interesting, my most-played game doesn't appear to be represented on the spider at all.

There was a plot like that in Batman: Arkham Origins actually 🤣
And that's one of two 'Detective' games I played this year so this tag checks out, but there was just one LEGO game (LotR) with lower playtime so the values on graph looks super bogus, and the game with highest playtime is not even represented 🤷‍♂️

The greatest detective in the world who hospitalize criminals. :D

Yeah, your #1 is LEGO, my #1 is pirates, and both don't represent the most played games. I would expect RPG and RTS but both don't appear on the graph. I feel like they don't look at plain playtimes.

Most of it makes sense except I have beautiful and open world survival. For the first one, just what even is that? Also, I can remember one open world game I've played this year and that was Palworld which I did not play enough to be on any list. Besides that it all adds up.

I agree that beautiful as a tag doesn't make sense. Tags are for grouping. "Beautiful" doesn't help with grouping.

Pirates is republic of pirates, an anno-like. Hacking it's hacknet + maybe technotopia.
God game i just understood, it's reus 2 + wandering village + these doomed isles
Medical sim, it's war hospital + potioncraft alchemist (weird).

Noticed you've pirates too, so went to see on your profile. Port royale 2 i suppose.

I played Port Royale 2 a lot but it was not this year actually. I checked pirates tag on my library and saw only 3 games, which are "Return of the Obra Dinn", "Shantae: Risky's Revenge" and "Windward". Playtime-wise it shouldn't be #1 I believe.

By the way, first time noticing medical sim tag. I only have one game with it though.
