I just read that Titanfall runs on a modded version of the Source Engine.. ya know... the engine Half-Life 2 runs on..

ARE THEY OUT OF THEIR MINDS??!!

AND HOW is it possible for the Source Engine to run something that heavy?!
No wonder people said the textures were pretty mediocre in the beta... That's what you get when you use an OUTDATED, OUTDATED EA, OUTDATED ENGINE!

.. they could have used CryEngine, Frostbite or even Unreal Engine.. but Source? Really?!

Anyway, i at least don't hope the game is a ripoff for the people that bought. I heard it was pretty good :)

This game looks pretty good IMO. The Source engine is quite robust. So yes, they did do it on the Source engine.

A week ago i played on a little cops & robbers RPG server in Garry's Mod.
It ran like hell. I run Counter-Strike: Source on the highest setting avalible perfectly with 60+ fps, and this sligtly enhanced server ran with 13 FPS.

THEN, HOW IS IT POSSIBLE TO MAKE TITANFALL ON THAT SAME ENGINE?!
Must be black magic! XD

Because it's not same Source that HL2 runs on, but an improved version ("Source 2014").

It is improved.. at little.
Still, i think it's incredible!
I mean, the engine was made in 2004! :D

Source is based on GoldSrc which is based on Quake.

So the engine was made in 1996.

Source distantly originates from the GoldSrc engine, itself a heavily modified version of John D. Carmack's Quake engine.

Following your logic, it's not even Valve's engine.

For example, L4D2 and Portal 2 runs on Source too, but they look much better than HL2 or CS:S, because they didn't use the same engine as other said, but an improved version of it. But at least a lot of people can run it with old PC's :D

Games in Garry's Mod tend to use Lua scripting for game logic and stuff, which is likely slower to interpret than whatever Source uses natively. Also, games people make in GMod are not necessarily nearly as optimized as a retail game, depending on how much time people spent on that aspect. For example, you could do something like make a map out of props that are "welded" together, but since props have physics applied to them by default, that creates a lot of unnecessary calculations (especially if you bump into something).

^This. Source is the most optimized engine on the planet and still looks quite good. Also, this isn't just vanilla Source supplied by Valve - Respawn has heavily modified it.

I played the Titanfall Beta at max settings and it looks spectacular.

Source 2 can only be shipped by Valve. Other people's modifications are just that, modifications of Source 1.

Comment has been collapsed.

The original is much more distant since Source is a modified version of Gold Source (HL1 and mods) which is a modified version of Quake engine. IW's COD engine was also a modified version of the Quake engine, so they're building their game on what they're familiar with.

Also, Source engine has alot of versions, latest I belive is 2013, so it's not outdated.

Sorry I'll answer only you instead of copy-pasting it to everyone, but does this mean from now on nobody will hate Activision, since they never made CoD and all?

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Of course they are responsable for the game, but if they just don't care about it's quality as long as it's selling they'll still invest money into it.If Activision would care about what products it's selling, they wouldn't let the devs copy-paste from older games.
Usually what happens is that the publisher(Activision/EA/etc.) wants the game out as soon as possible even if it's not really 'finished' (Mass Effect 3 for example).

Developers make the games, Publishers get them out to the public and advertise for them.

And you are right, they didn't. They own the IP and produce, market and publish the game. But the studios are the ones that "make" the game. It's like saying the publisher of a book is the one who wrote it...

Of course, that doesn't mean the publisher had no word in development. They often do, for better or for worse.

CryEngine and Frostbite use way too much resources to maintain at least 30 fps. Source engine is a way better because you don't need a high-end pc for the game.

Source has always proven to me to be the best optimized engine ever, so why not? Portal 2, Left 4 Dead 2 and CS:GO all run at max settings for me without lag, while other modern games like Metro 2033, Skyrim, PAYDAY 2 lag on just max resolution.

Comment has been collapsed.

It IS a great engine!
But still.. were they really THAT lazy at Respawn and EA?

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

It is not about being lazy, they said they were known to Source Engine, so it would be faster to ship a game with it instead of going to something 100% new.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

If you mean that lazy as to almost completely remake the engine themselves instead of using CryEngine out of the box then yes, they are lazy.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

How is using the Source Engine anymore lazy than using the Unreal Engine, CryEngine or Frostbite Engine as you suggested?
They used it because they were familliar with it, and they knew there were other games made which ran very well on consoles using Source or Modified Source engines as well.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Wow, that reaction.

Why on earth are you so surprised? The Source engine is one of the most optimised engines out there.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Because source engine runs fine and has a great netcode, hit registration. That's why it was really polished in beta, but it still sucks as a game.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

I prefer a game made in an old, reliable and well known engine, than a laggy piece of shit made in the last engine available. MWO is made in cryengine, i have a monstrous computer, and it doesn't even reach 60 FPS in some maps because the developers are learning how to use the goddamned thing. Same with Metro franchise, and thief lately.

Give me UE or Source any day.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Both Metro games run good for me, they require video card power more than CPU power like most games do these days :/ and I have a mid-end card, HD7750.

And I would've said that for Source in the past too... but some Source games run great for me, some run terribly... TF2 and CS:GO run terrible, but Portal 2, Left 4 Dead 2 and most low-player or single-player games run great even on highest settings.

The source engine is extremely mod-able. Why do you think there's all these gamemodes in CSGO, CSS, 1.6 and Gmod? You can modify it like hell. The basic source engine is really just a skeleton. You can modify it to make it look just as good as Unreal and it would run better too. Insurgency also runs on the Source engine. Honestly the Source engine is really really REALLY good, but only as good as you make it. It's not hard to make the Source engine crappy, but you can also make it into Titanfall.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Source Engine is one of the best engines ever made IMO. However, it was heavily modified and therefore Titanfall doesn't look and feel like other Source games, but it still looks and runs great on pretty much everything.

That's because all they add are bloom in the form of nuclear aftermath and dogs.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

I think that CoD is bad because of the following:

all the "new" titles (after mw) are similar to one another.
Most of the community really sucks and full of spoiled swearing kids.
Acti charges 60$ every year for the "newer" version.
Considering point number one and that most other FPSes cost less and are not yearly IPs make CoD really expensive.
Maps DLCs for 15$... same as above.
Medicore gameplay with nothing "special".

I don't care about how or from what a game was made of, I care about the final product.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

True.

But if you read comments about CoD there's always tons of "they use same old Q3 engine". But when you read comments here you can see same people bashing CoD for using "old engine" that praise Titanfall for using "old engine".

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Source 2 is a complete overall and updating. What you are saying is akin to saying Cry engine v1 and Cry engine v3 are the same too, or the first Unreal engine vs UE3.

People complain about CoD's engine and gameplay because its very literally the SAME BLOODY GAME year after year. Even going so far as to reuse cut scenes/endings.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

But there's no Source 2, Valve might be working on one, but with them we might see it when PS5 gets released.
Titanfall is still HL2, just with more blooms, HDTs and other beauties (which is something CoD teams also add to good old engine). They didn't add even smallest environment destruction, for example. You can't hate CoD for "using Q3 engine" while saying "Titanfall isn't using HL2 engine" (notice, I'm ONLY talking about engine-issue, I hate CoD with passion for all it broke in gaming, but in engine-case you can't hate one and like another, it's same story).

This also happens with Valve. when EA does shit everyone complain (and they should),
buy once Valve does something silly (like region locked games with regular pricing or waiting about 72 hours on average for a replay from the support) everyone is fine with it.

source is much better than unreal

unreal my look better but runs much worse in the backgroun it has a texture pop-in issue that is inherit in the engine

and has no free movement so titanfall's wall jumping wouldn't be impossible on unreal but would be as crappy as unreal is

source is just dated but it can be a great start for an engine for a company and since they just started out this shouldn't matter better than starting with unreal rocksteady's version is the only version i respect out of all the crappy unreal mods out there

and no the textures aren't because the engine is dated its most likely due to the xb1 version
