I just read that Titanfall runs on a modded version of the Source Engine.. ya know... the engine Half-Life 2 runs on..

ARE THEY OUT OF THEIR MINDS??!!

AND HOW is it possible for the Source Engine to run something that heavy?!
No wonder people said the textures were pretty mediocre in the beta... That's what you get when you use an OUTDATED, OUTDATED EA, OUTDATED ENGINE!

.. they could have used CryEngine, Frostbite or even Unreal Engine.. but Source? Really?!

Anyway, i at least don't hope the game is a ripoff for the people that bought. I heard it was pretty good :)

Yes, Titanfall runs on a modified Source engine.
Portal 2 uses a modified Source engine as well, is that a surprise?

This Source Engine is an updated/modified version one, not the old obviously. However the game looks great, that's the point, not making it very demanding or a lot ppl with low PCs won't be able to play, and a multiplayer needs a lot of ppl.

Source Engine is not that outdated, see CSGO or Dota2. Like UE3 back then and now. They said somewhere that they use source engine for its ability to maintain 60fps. (I googled it since BETA. I spotted .vpk files in the game.)

CSGO has barely passing texture quality. Dota 2 looks better than CSGO and when CSGO was first released it looked really outdated. Either way Source is more stable than UE3.

its interesting how EA studio can make a game on source engine with nice performance and valve guys screwing csgo about 10 frames every update

This is pretty funny. Valve can't even use their own engine correctly and yet a developer that EA is using can make a game run better on Source. It's a sad day. A really sad day.

Valve isn't the developer for CS:GO... Hidden Path and Valve both technically develop CS:GO, but since Valve has never broken anything else, it's probably Hidden Path, since they also broke the game balance, enjoyment, etc.

Yes, looks like...

And here you have Source 2 image Left 4 Dead ¿3? map.

And yes, i bought Titanfall cause is really good game, nice and fast FPS to play. But the Origin server is pissing me off, i download 30 minutes at 7Mb/s, now downloading 440Kb/s. T.T

Man... looking at the screenshot, I think something like Fallout needs made in source with that sort of setting.
The area and stuff, not zombies... But prefferably still with vegetation.

I know Valve is doing "something" with Source 2. But knowing Valve, they might be on the very end or very start of work - just look how long they took to get TF2 out (they said they will release it "soon" in 1998).

Electricity V2.0 is based on electricity V1.0, so that's outdated too.

Although EA is really cheap to use this engine,

Source engine = Best engine.

Only thing EA is involved in is publishing the game, they do not own the rights to any part of the project apart from those needed to physically publish the game. They can not say, dictate that they make the game more like COD, or that the devs release 200 things of DLC.

Why are you so mad and typing in caps?

Not every studio has the budget to afford to make a game on Unreal or w/e other engine you dream of.

This game shipped with 15 maps and tons of amazing mechanics in it. They also wanted a viable and responsive platform. They made the best choice by picking Source.

No need to act like an ignorant twat about it. Before making this ridiculous thread you could have googled this and even take a look on reddit. But you didn't... So I guess you obviously wanted some attention because it's a new hyped game so it feels the best to just rub it in people's faces. Nice tactics.

What exactly does an engine have to do with textures?

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

The texture resolution can be limited by hardcoded limits in engine or in general how engine is optimised or so on... So quite a lot...

And then there is other tricks that engine could do on textures and so on...

I really dont think that the engine is really a limiting factor to it I have seen some old games with hardcore texture mods that look really, really cool.

The problem with the Source Engine is the netcode bug that Valve has refused to ever fix; the one where you shoot someone like 5 times and only have 2 bullets REALLY hit them, or you get shot after ducking behind a wall but it's not a through the wall shot, or you dodge like 110 degrees to the side of someone and they shoot where you were at like 1 second ago and hit you. This isn't lag, there are no settings that help it, it does affect everybody, and this is a bug.. so, don't start with your trolling and consider yourself lucky if you don't realize it's happening to you. This just ruins the experience for a lot of people, and the people who don't recognize it ... well, as the saying goes ignorance is bliss?

I personally refuse to ever buy another Source Engine game again, due to this very bug. Now if they come out with a new Source Engine that's had it's netcode rewritten, I might consider purchasing again. I think they should have just paid id software to program their netcode for them and been done with it... There's just no excuse for the bad netcode in this age; programmers learned about this extensively and how to do it correctly over a decade ago.

How do you know that this is an engine bug? Maybe its the game's devs mistake or a server-side problem.I have also heard about the fact that you shoot people in CSGO and nothing happens, but I'm not too sure if it's because of the engine itself or something else.

This is indeed a server-side problem. Offical CS:GO server are running on 64 ticks. Video comparison
Edit: You can even see the hits registered by the game itself, but not by the server. This is clearly a not an enigne problem.

I consider the server software part of the engine. Ticks are also irrelevant; it occurs on 128 tick, lans, you can throw as beefy hardware as you want at it.. and even Tier 1 internet providers and the issue still occurs.

Man. Do you understand that there are already 8 big versions of Source Engine(8th version games - Portal 2, Dota 2, CS:GO and Stanley Parable) and 25 big engine patches(last one i know was Source Engine 24, with added SteamPipe and Linux comp.)? It has been in constant development since the release of HL2, and yes, CS Source uses one of the older versions(SE 6, aka SE 2009), that doesn't have lots of features from newest one. Just Google it. And go compare CS: Source screenshots to CS:GO or even Left 4 Dead 2. Even if you compare screenshots from original version of HL2, and updated one (current) - you WILL see the difference (HDR, Shaders etc.)

And by calling Source an outdated engine, you look like a complete dumbass.

Sorry for bad english.

CS:Go uses an old version of the L4D2 engine, unpatched... That's why there's still some serious issues (hud disappearance, frame leaks, etc); that's why a lot of the anti-cheat community refused to code server plugins for it... it's so dated, even compared to the current TF2 version.
