Weird, if you already owned it technically then Steam should have blocked you from purchasing and only had a gift option, which would have been a big hint that this would happen.
Definitely would advise to contact Steam support, but say you want either a way to get the deluxe content or a refund if that is not possible since it seems you're fine with your purchase, you're just not fine with the fact that it won't activate. Who knows, they might be able to remove the standard version so you can get the deluxe.

Thanks. Yeah, I'm writing them now asking if they can revoke my copy of the standard version. Seems a little unorthodox for someone to want a game removed from their library, but if that's the only option left to me I'll take it! Received the standard edition for free anyway =/

You're not alone, I've read many articles about this and can be done but not easy. Search google for further information but AFAIR you need to contact support several times until you find someone friendly who will listen your appeal otherwise they simply deny. Also you need to remind them according to User Agreement/TOS or etc. (there's a clause for this) you have the right to terminate your subscription to certain game giving all the details. Then they need to remind you that you'll not be refunded and you must accept this. Then when they cancel that subscription the related game will be removed from your library. In case you get same copy of the game again then same serial will be assigned to you...
Just dig steamcommunity with google search and good luck...

Just get it the next time it's $5 for Deluxe on Amazon for the Uplay version. Honestly, I don't think it's worth playing and paying that much again though for a couple skins and map areas (plus the non-game stuff).

Nothing to do with your Problem, but the two single player maps the Deluxe comes with you get even for free with the basic version of the game (Part of the 0 uPlay Points DLC). The Armor Skin and the Harlequin are also unlockable with uPlay Points you get from the Achievements ingame.
Just to inform people, who may be interested but get letdown from the Deluxe Edition price. You dont realy lose ingame content.

So I already own AC Brotherhood Standard, and there's no way to "upgrade" from Standard to Deluxe other than buying the whole Deluxe version, or so I thought...
I just purchased Deluxe on Steam, went to claim, yet I'm told "This game is already in your game library!" I've checked my Brotherhood folder to ensure I don't have the extra content (I don't).
Should I contact support and tell them I want my money back? Has anyone gotten around this unique problem? Sounds like a mundane issue, but I'm a sucker for extras and completeness.
