Awesome. Don't expect it to be like CoD/BF, though.
There's tons of mods for it increasing realism even further, a LOT of maps, units, vehicles etc.
However, I'd recommend getting it at store.bistudio.com, as the developers get the most for their work that way. Also, Steam does some scary sh*t to the game's folder structures and how it's launched, and Steam in-game overlay does funny stuff as well.

I've heard about the massive amount of content for modding it. Also, obligatory "fuck CoD."

You need OA primarily. You can run DayZ without Arma 2, but you still need the free version. Except some textures and other stuff will be somewhat messed up.

Just a warning to everybody here: You need Operation Arrowhead (or Combined Operations) for this to work; Arma II by itself will not allow this mod (and many others) to work.
I've found this out the worse way possible, if that's what you're wondering.

I brought Arma II for this reason alone. Can never have enough Zombie Love.

Amazing mod, you can play for hours. Even by yourself.
Also, you need Arma Operation Arrowhead, you can use Arma 2 Free.
The textures are meh, but they aren't bad.
Edit : It's worth the money, don't wait for a sale on Arma: CO
Just buy it. :D

I've played about 200 hours of it, its pretty darn good. Models are nice, other than some human models - Gameplay is not going to be like COD/BF, u will find it to be a bit more stiffer but it has a good variety of different weapons. Flying is more realistic than your average game (for example helicopter flying in black ops 1 or bf3 helicopter and fighter jet flying) but I enjoy it more in arma - there is a mod for easier flying anyway.

I hope it'll be cheaper during the steam summer sale. By then I'll actually have some money.

So I'm kinda curious about this. I'm more interested in the player interactions more-so than the zombies. With the bandits and the like, it sounds like the closest you could get to something that feels like a "STALKER MMO".
Personally I like the idea of shooting some fleeing half-dying survivor of a zombie horde rather than picking off the Zeds. There's something almost animalistic about gunning a man down for his baked-beans.
However I assume there's going to be no decent servers form my region right off the bat.

Open world PVP, you can group up with tons of other players and just hunt down bandits.
They just added the sickness factor to the game, where you get a cold and slowly die, you get reduced health until you find antibiotics.
There are many servers that fun and that not bad all over the region.
Sad part is, they're gonna take away the survivor/bandit aspect, but you can acquire different skins throughout the whole world.

From what i'm reading on the forums. It's not helping, i guess.
I'm sorta for it and against it.
One for the realism it'll give. You're gonna have to be more cautious around other survivors. But then again, i really like the skin it gives. Hope it'll be one of skins you loot in the next patch.

Day Z is very fun. Just be prepared for the massive amount of dickheads/trolls that infest it.

From the short time I played it - awesome, be warned tought - it really isn't a zombie shooter, AT ALL. You'll be crawling around zed's hoping to find some ammo, food or meds while being scared to death that a bandid shoots you and you loose your sniper rifle with 3 bullets. At night it's even more scarier and awesome, especially if you have a nice set of headphones and turn the light off. Go watch some gameplay of it and buy it! Totally worth it and as a bonus you get the original ArmaII wich I heard is a nice military sim btw =)

Obviously this mod has some serious traction already (ARMA II is in the top sellers on Steam despite being slightly dated and having no current sale), and looks like it'll be fantastic once it's finished. However, I don't own ARMA II. If I buy it sometime down the road I'll certainly play it, but this mod is what really piqued my interest.
So, how's the game by itself?
