yes i think so and i can't understand, that they have such Power and can make this every Year, is there really no protection against a DDoS Attack ? I don't know much about Hacking and Stuff, but the big Companys like Steam, PSN, XBOX didn't have Hacker as well to protect such Attacks ?

Because it's almost absurdly effective and reliable I guess.

There are actually smart DDoS attacks. There's a variety where the attacker(s) send data very slowly to the server. They send a request, then wait until the server is about to drop the connection and send another packet to keep the connection open. The server may have a limited amount of concurrent connections, so the attacker can quickly fill up all of them without using much processing power or bandwidth. This attack can bring down a large, powerful server with something as simple as a 3g phone.

As Catplane mentioned, that's a Slow Loris attack, and it won't work on all targets. Mainly, it works on servers running Apache, which is very common, but there are a few other that it will work on as well. And then there are those that it won't work on.

Here's the thing a DDoS attack is so simple anyone can do it and unfortunately its also one of the hardest things to stop.
The people joking about hitting F5 aren't all that far off for how it happens.
All a DDoS is, is sending a whole lot of requests to a single server. They usually come from different IP addresses, but they all happen at about the same time.
Its basically what happens the first day of every steam sale.
The only real ways to stop it are buying more hardware, having mirrored sites, and blocking multiple requests from the same IP.
I'm pretty sure you can actually buy DDoS scripts online (for cheap). I could probably make one if I wanted to since its little more than a loop hitting the website. There also are "botnets" which can be accessed that will do it for you. (botnets are collections of virus infected computers which can then be used for all sorts of nefarious purposes)
So its not a matter of power, or of skill, with a little digging / spending ANYONE on this forum could actually do it.
(now, if they somehow use the DDoS to get private data, THEN I might be impressed)
tl;dr - DDoS attacks are a dime a dozen. They happen accidentally all the time.

It's not that easy. For a DDoS to work it need to be made from a large range of PCs. Otherwise you just get a DoS, not a DDoS and they usually do not work.
You cannot make a DDoS by yourself, unless you have a whole infrastructure of computers (that span a large range of IP address), or you use botnets.

I was simplifying.
cough I didn't forget the second D stood for Distributed really cough
;)
I did mention botnets though! :P (and that my computer couldn't do it)
An individual doing a DoS would require more work, that would actually require skill. (most likely exploiting the database somehow)
Though I wonder, would some of my virtual machine farms be sufficient... They all have the same subnet but different IPs. Its a lot of computing power...
Actually, why am I even wondering? We just applied a patch to prevent them from being used like this...

Well, you can probably just buy hours of usage/services of already existing botnets on dark net.
And that is probably all they are doing... for the fun and fame of it...

As I said here, it's not really "hacking", it's just flooding. And yes, there are some measures that can be taken to prevent DDoS attacks from hitting you too bad, but these are limited in scope, and don't work really well. DoS attacks can be protected against far more easily. The issue is that it's hard to tell what's a legitimate request and what's not. There's no good way of detecting it.

Maybe to show how Valve is incredible vulnerable? While there are no real counter measures against DDOS, there are still someways to control it. But Valve didn't gave a shit about last year. While having only a few services down, it went into a complet meltdown mode.

Artificial boost of self-esteem? Can't find another explanation.

Valve are just another utterly depressing corporation nowadays. It's annoying I can't play CS for a bit but honestly find it hard to be mad at someone giving them a swift kick in the balls.

That's one thing which is wrong with modern times. You just cant go and hack someones head off anymore .

Similar to some idiot saying he is going to make it rain soon.
But hey, no doubt it is him. He posted on the internet.

If I remember right, didn't those servers go down the last few years on xmas anyway?
I just assumed they would go down again because people never learn...
You get a million people with brand new toys all wanting to hit the game sites and of course they are going to go down!

If it gets slow enough from load, it goes down!
Its what I've been fixing the last two weeks. (groan)
People holiday shopping are hammering our customer's servers. The memory usage gets out of control and the server crashes.
The key questions are, if someone steps in before that happens and how much load happens all at once.

I'm sorry. I posted my selfie in the dating group and all those friend request from hot grills must've slowed the servers a bit. Egg on my face. I will not be so sexy next time. Click at your own risk and note - i'm no longer accepting marriage proposals.

Sure, they can do this, but we're still stuck with Trump.

Seriously though, a claim after DDoS happening (or whatever truly happened) means nothing at all - anybody could do that. Although I don't believe I've seen such big downtime in a while, so I expect something had to "help" Volvo, as clearly everything is unavailable, not under big load. To me it looks more like a hack or actual technical issue, because master server is still responding.

I agree! I know very little about computers, especially in comparison to most you guys. However I know enough about teenagers to know they like being noticed and will claim they did pretty much anything.
I hope its just a technical hitch which gets fixed properly without rushing the site back online!
