. Great thread / Idea !
Most of the classics have been already mentioned here, so let me write about two of my favorites:
. Thief 2. What a masterpiece! The first game was great, and, together with Metal Gear Solid (both released in the same year, 1998), they pretty much defined how the Stealth genre would work in the 3D gaming age. Thief 2, however, pushed the amazing Dark Engine to its limits with unmatched level design. "Life of the Party", "First City Bank and Trust" and "Sabotage" (this one alone took me 6h+ to beat, including lots of planning) were probably my greatest 1st person gaming experiences. Sadly, Thief 3 didn't leave up to the first two games at all, although "Robbing the Cradle" is a hallmark in level design. I have not played the 2014 game.
. Metal Gear. That's right, the very first one, which I played on a real MSX2 back in the late 80s... while it was not the first 'Stealth Game' as many think (this title belongs to Castle Wolfenstein, a Apple II game from 1981), it started the Metal Gear series. That, alone, would be enough; add to it great level design, a very large game area, and a convoluted storyline that would became a trademark of the whole series, and the conclusion is easy: 'Operation Intrude N313', is a true classic of stealth gaming.

I definitely want in
Chaos Theory best Splinter Cell and stealth game ever. The graphics were awesome, the lighting and sound mechanics were amazing, the split jump, the sarcastic interrogations, the harsh real life alow pace and "two-bullet death"... Realistic and awesome. Close second is Mark of the Ninja, 2D side scrolling stealth game? Immediately fell in love

When someone first suggested Mark of the Ninja to me I completely dismissed it saying that I don't want my stealth to be in 2D. Then I picked it up during a sale and completely fell in love as you said. I guess that game just does this to people :D

I would have to go with Metal Gear Solid, I think. I played it at a time when there was nothing else like it, at least as far as I knew. It was just so unique that it really stayed with me.
I'm actually attempting to develop my own game, which part of the gameplay is aimed towards a stealth element. It's still in pretty early development, but I'd actually appreciate some feedback on how I might improve or build upon the stealth, from a purist's perspective, if you'd be interested in looking at some examples and talking.

I'd be honoured to help you and I am sure everyone in the group would be delighted to provide you the feedback you are looking for. Please make sure to post the details in the group, we have some very eager ghosts there who would be more than happy to help including me :D

I love Stealth games. I Always played stealth on almost everygame.
This is why I'm waiting so much Dishonored 2, TES VI, (decent)New Assassin's Creed games.
I Hope you will make me discover awesome stealth games

My favorite will be metal gear because you have a stealth camouflage and you carry a box that you can use to hide, isnt that awesome! :) I also like splinter cell game a lot.
I played the newest thief game but everyone says thief 2 is better so I guess I will need to buy in next steam sale cause now I am intrigued.

I didn't think I was a stealth gamer until I played a thief/archer in Skyrim and now I'm hooked on that kind of gameplay. Here are a few screenshots and a 20-second clip of that character. Would love to be a part of the group and discover more :)

Well, my favorite game serie was Hitman... until the 5th episode which simplified too many aspects of the gameplay (it's still a great game). Blood Money was probably the game I finished the most, mostly by doing speedruns of each level with a perfect score.
But my first revelation about stealth games was Commandos 2 : in that game, everything was just perfect! I give it easily a 5/5 stars. Beautiful 2D environments, great challenge with a lot of levels, searching the pieces of a torn picture on the entire map, a lot of new ideas since the 1rst game + expansion... Even the 3rd game didn't reach the degree of excellence of Commandos 2 Men of Courage : too short and too much actions. I have to come back in this game, probably with the Steam version this time! :D
Oh! And the multiplayer of Splinter Cell Pandora Tomorrow : so much laughting and memories with my friends!!!

Stealth games are my favourite type of games (and FPS, these 2 combined are the best), and I've been loving them ever since I played the very first one in my life.
Even if I'd try to, I couldn't choose a favourite out of them. I aboslutely love all the Stealth games, these include the Splinter Cell games, the Hitman franchise, the Thief series, Asassin's Creeds, Dishonored, and I also played Wolfenstein: The New Order in stealth wherever it was possible, and the list goes on...
I'd really like to join this community, maybe I'll find out about a lot of other stealth games that I'm gonna love.

For me the best game is Thief: The Dark Project, simply because it was the first one of the kind I played (and, possibly, the first one of the kind made), and I was amazed by everything: how my character was weak, forcing me to think; how the guards AI was responsive to my actions and events in the environment; how the levels were thought out to represent real places, and to allow lots of exploring, with plenty of options; how there was no immediate fail state (so many stealth-wannabes get this wrong) — when discovered I could still try to confuse the guards, run, hide, out-wait and out-patient them.
I feel that I've played better stealth games since (e.g. without zombies), but TDP still holds a very special spot in my heart.
It was a birthday gift from my friend, I don't think he's aware what he's done to my attitude towards games, systems, AI, level architecture, interactivity, immersion etc :)

I can totally understand how our first can be so special :D My first stealth game was Splinter Cell 1. I was about 7-8 years old when I finished it and it was an amazing experience from start to finish. I'll always hold it dear to my heart :)

I'm a bit weird in that even though I love playing stealthily and I own a decent amount of stealth games, I actually haven't played many from that genre. Even though it's one of the only ways I play and my favorite genre. So since I'm not qualified on talking about real stealth games, I can say my favorite "stealth game" - or in this case series, are the Assassin's Creed games. While not stealth games per say, I very much enjoy the unique take on stealth in the AssCreed series as a whole and in my many playthroughs of the games I've gotten very good at it. I actually wrote a guide for stealth in the older installments of the series here if anyone is interested. While that guide focuses on the older games, I think the stealth really shines in the newer games, where useful tools like whistling, corner cover, cherry bombs, dynamic hiding spots, etc. have been added.
Mark of the Ninja also gets an honorable mention from me because it's a great, very polished platformer with some amazing stealth mechanics that make the game challenging, but not infuriatingly so. I never fought a guard once in that game, Ninjas aren't supposed to go around fighting everyone!
I own 2 of the Hitman games (and hope to own the newest one soon), and Deus Ex: HR, among many other stealth games and I'm so excited about playing them all. I hope to get around to it soon. Once I play more stealth games, I'm sure I'll change my mind about Assassin's Creed being my favorite in terms of stealth :)
by the way, I'd like to join your group!

Welcome to the group :) It'd be great to hear your thoughts on our discussion board once you get a chance to play the full stealth games. I played all Assassin's Creed games with the exception of Syndicate, which is said to be the most polished one in terms of stealth but I couldn't get it for financial reasons. Earlier AC games were quite weak in stealth but I still enjoyed them nonetheless :D
I also realised that you've been on my WL all this time :P
Comment has been collapsed.
Thank you :) I've been doing an AC marathon lately but I've just finished Unity and will move on to Syndicate so I can get started on those real stealth games fairly soon. I've also heard it expanded on Unity's broken stealth, and basically made it not broken lol (because Unity's stealth could've been so great if they had polished it a bit more). I agree, the stealth only got good in 3 onwards but was still quite fun.
Hah thank you! I wonder why, but anyway I WL'ed you back :)
Comment has been collapsed.
You didn't have to hehe :) I probably got a positive vibe from you on forums. I just WL anyone I see who I think is nice.
I should mention that I don't do much stealth in AC games, I try them but it never feels so satisfying to me. I am killing people left and right anyway so I might as well go all out. Although I absolutely love those missions that require you to tail a target without being detected, you have to sneak inside heavily guarded camps and so on, that's the kind of thrill AC makes me enjoy a lot but they are so few :(
Comment has been collapsed.
I totally agree! Since I do multiple playthroughs of the series, I kind of alternate between being always stealthy or being like a killing machine, there's no in between. I find it's pretty fun to try to go a whole mission without killing someone, it's especially challenging in those camps you were talking about. I think you're the only person I've talked to who actually likes those tailing missions though :P Those kinds of missions are definitely few and far between, you kind of have to create your own kind of mission within the mission so the stealth feels challenging and satisfying. Otherwise it's kind of just a repeat of 1. lure 2. hide 3. kill until everyone is dead

You kind of have to create your own kind of mission within the mission so the stealth feels challenging and satisfying.
Incredibly well said. I actually do this a lot. For example while playing Thief my challenge was to never use arrows of any kind (and I did finish it without using any arrows), Hitman; without using instinct or any type of items to distract. If I have to do a takedown to progress it always has to be up and close, not with some silenced weapon from a distance.
These little things make the game more challenging and satisfying once you accomplish them. I also love that we have all these tools to create our own playstyles. I'm definitely going for "no abilities used" challenge in Dishonored 2 once it launches. I literally screamed when they announced that the whole game could be finished without using a single ability. (It's kinda my thing but most games don't make room for that :D)
Comment has been collapsed.
Those are some really good ideas! I see a lot of overuse of distraction tools in some Hitman gameplay videos, so I imagine not using them at all would be very hard. I love placing restrictions on my gameplay, it adds difficulty, but it's difficulty on my terms and not what the game is trying to push on me. I recently played the first AC with only my hidden blade, which was hard at first because you can't fight with it, only counter, and that window for countering is very small.
Dishonored 2 looks great. I played the first one for a few hours (I quit after getting powers) and hated it for some reason, but I'm thinking of giving it another go because everyone else seems to love it. I think I partially didn't like it because of the first person aspect, but I've gotten more used to that now. Do you think giving it another chance is a good idea?
Comment has been collapsed.
Dishonored is a fantastic game that's meant to be played and enjoyed. You don't have to like it but I'd strongly suggest trying it out for a couple of missions so you will see more of what it can offer. My first playthrough was 0 kill, 0 knock out, full ghost, no abilities used (except blink on very rare occasions which I thought was mandatory).
I actually took a break from Dishonored for a month after first mission. I was going for a particular achievement and after finishing the mission I realised that I didn't fulfill that criteria but there was no indication in the game at all. I got really angry and stopped playing due to frustration. I went back to it and it become one of my most favourite games of all time :D Besides not many games allow full pacifist playstyle but Dishonored does. You have so many reasons to kill and hurt people cause they are monsters but you can also choose not to harm any of them. The ending as well as the setting change according to your choices.
Ps, My Hitman style can be crazy. I prefer to go Suit Only + Silent Assassin challenges without using any distraction items or instinct. I timed my session on Morocco mission; first time ever, no opportunities, no markers, no distraction, no disguises etc etc. Took me around 3 hours and 12 minutes :D It's pretty demanding but it also feels fantastic :D

Thanks for the advice there, I think I will go back to it then. I don't want to get the high chaos ending, so I think I'll make the effort for doing a no kill run. If you can do a full ghost with no powers on your first playthrough, then maybe I can do that with powers (because I'm clearly not as skilled as you :P).
Damn that's impressive, you should be one of those stealth Youtubers that just blows everyone away with their stealthiness, seems like something you may enjoy :)

Hard to say my favorite one, really, as I played a lot. It would be easy to go with Hitman too as I've been playing that lately. Deus Ex Mankind Divided would also be one of those I've played and loved recently. And of course, Human Revolution is one of my favorite games of all time, stealth game or not.
Then going a bit further back, you have The Phantom Pain, which was my first Metal Gear and I absolutely loved. Then go back a generation and you have Splinter Cell games like Conviction and Double Agent. And going even further back, you have Syphon Filter. So many good games to choose from. Haha ^^

I really can't choose between MGS and Dishonored. I guess i'll go with Dishonored. I just loved the interactions between the player and the enviroment. The way how all the side missions were interesting and intriguing. I also loved how the game rewarded you for exploring with items, money, side missions, amazing details and secrets and easter eggs. Also Supernatural abilities were a blast to use even though it kinda messed with the moral weight. Plus the art style and the setting were just to my liking :D

Hi there, Hitman/Deus Ex/Manhunt fan here. So it will be top3. Cant say i like stealth games, cause i like any interesting game, but i love the stealth approach in any type of them. That includes rogue characters in RPGs, sniper classes in FPSs, and prince Kassad in CnC Generals :P

I do not know how to interpret this particularly because I didn't ask for people to be playing stealth games only ;) I am one of the most passionate stealth players (possibly in the world) but right now I am playing World of Warcraft: Legion, Mafia II and some hidden object games.
So did you mean you don't like stealth games only as you also enjoy other genres or you really don't like stealth games? I'm gonna need a little more explanation on this before I extend an invite if that's also okay with you :)

Haha, good, so now in clear worlds : i like stealth games and i dont limit myself only to this aspect if game can offer more, but prefer to keep to silent path.

Definitely the original Thief The Dark Project. This was the first game that got me interested in gaming in the first place. I loved the novel idea of stealth and being able to complete it without killing a single AI. I love the Thief series so much Garrett is my avatar. I really enjoyed e sequel The Metal Age, less so Deadly Shaows, but it still had its thiefy charm. I actually really liked the 2014 Thief game. Nice updated graphics and smooth gameplay which stayed true to the original.
After the Thief series, I'd say the Splinter Cell games and Deus Ex. Whilst Deus Ex is my second favourite game/series, it can be played without stealth elements. I like true stealth games where you are punished for going in all guns blazing.
Anyway, sound like a good group and I'd like to join if you invite me.

I really love Garrett. One of the games I played a lot during my childhood was Thief and I would picture movies in my head starring him :P
I agree that there is no punishments in recent games so I prefer to punish myself :P It's usually an instant reload when I fail irrespective of how game or AI behaves after my mistake.
Welcome to the group :D

Well i'm not passionate, but i do enjoy stealth games and usually try to play the "pacifist" way. Original Thief has the best stealth mechanics from all stealth games i played, shadow and silence is the way. Cover and invisibility in Deus Ex feel stupid at times when you literally look in the face of the enemy but he doesn't notice you cause you're in cover. Hitman with all the gimmiky mechanics and complete lack of "logic" in AI feels ridiculous and so much unrealistic that i can't enjoy the series, sometimes it's hilarious to watch someone abuse the mechanics to achieve some amusing results though. The worst stealth system i'd say is in the TES series when you crouch in the middle of the street and suddenly "disappear" in the eyes of the guards... there should be lots of mods to fix that though.

Update: Stealth Purists recruitment will be on hold indefinitely. If you believe you will make a great addition to us and actually be active on the forums, feel free to apply by using one of my public giveaways. I am not looking for inactive members. Thank you.
Hello Steamgifts community. I decided to create a group called Stealth Purists which is directed at Stealth gamers only. I've always wanted to share my passion for Stealth games and meet new people who are like-minded but my previous attempts were in vain. Now that I joined Steamgifts about a month ago, I got the feeling from my past forum posts that there might be some Stealthers like me out there so I want to gather them in one group.
First and foremost, and this is the most important part, this group will not focus on giveaways. I do want to host giveaways from time to time but I don't know when that time will come because I currently have major financial problems. I don't want anyone to have any false hopes when joining this group because my focus is not winning or giving away games here.
My vision is creating and being a part of a safe and friendly place where people can spam the discussion board with all the stealth related topics they want to talk about. Maybe post their reviews if they have any or recommend games or share news/trailers of upcoming stealth games other members might not have heard of, share tactics and help each other become better ghosts. Possibilities are endless in my eyes. As you can see the focus is certainly on social interaction part.
I honestly don't care what your ratio is, I don't care how many games you have given away or won and what their real CVs are. There are only two things I care about and these 2 factors are the only requirements to join this group.
I never expected that some generous people would be hosting giveaways for this group even when I specified that the focus is not giveaways. Again while the focus is not giveaways, I still came up with some rules and guidelines for our members to follow if you want to enter these giveaways.
Your ratio or level doesn't matter and there are no obligatory giveaways. My focus is on community and I wouldn't want for anyone to join the group with false hopes. I also do not want inactive people!
To pick members (if anyone actually wants to join), I kindly ask you to write about your most favourite stealth game and why you like that game more than the other ones. Honourable mentions are also more than welcome. If you want to talk about your favourite stealth game but are not interested in joining the group I kindly ask you to mention this on your reply so I won't annoy you with group invites :D
I will go first of course. It is insanely hard for me to pick one game but I will pick the latest Hitman. The abundance of signature kills, having all the creativity and the freedom of an open world map to plan my move, the challenges that come with Suit Only and Silent Assassin and the replayability value make Hitman the best Stealth game for me personally. I spent around 25 hours on Paris mission alone while putting in around 10-15 hours each on the rest of the episodes and I loved every single second of it, even the seconds that drove me to tear out my hair :)
Here is something that should get you started if you are looking for a good stealth game.I genuinely hope that this topic will help me meet Stealth maniacs like me and pave the way to form great friendships in the near future. I hope you all have a great day no matter what genre of game you play <3
