I really want to say Thief (the first one). It was absolutely amazing when it came out, there was nothing like it. Then again, same can be said for the first Hitman. That one was somewhat more entertaining to watch, whereas Thief involved more suspense. Batman was decent, but stealth is just a small part of a big whole, in the same way that Deus Ex isn't just about stealth. Thief has aged, and it's no longer my favorite game, but, it really nailed it perfectly, including the idea of hiding in shadows, waiting for guards to move away, etc. And unlike the other games, there really isn't another way to play.

Classics are really the best in Stealth genre. The very first Thief was absolutely magnificent. I remember failing at it so much as a kid but finally beating it during my university years. This is why games like Styx are very special because even though they are recent games they have this classic Thief like oldschool stealth feel to it. As for Deus Ex except the boss parts I ghosted the whole thing without any takedowns but those bosses were such a nightmare and it totally killed the immersion for me.
I actually kinda enjoyed the last Thief game. I thought it was much more challenging than Dishonored for example and chapters like 7 were seriously challenging to complete in my playstyle of no using any arrows or any type of distraction items.

My 2nd favourite Hitman game is Blood Money so I suggest playing that. And Absolution is not as bad as people say it is in my opinion. I hated the story myself but the missions were quite entertaining and disguises not working properly make the game more challenging altogether.
Comment has been collapsed.
+1 on Blood Money, my favourite so far I think.
About Absolution: it was fun for most part, but I got bored at the end, so last few levels were a bit of mayhem on my part :S

You probably have done it, but I'll leave this here for those who don't know it: If you like stealth classics, give The Dark Mod a go. Plus it's free! And it's awesome. It's right up there with my best gaming experiences. Some of the community-made missions are just mind-blowing, and usually super immersive.
Comment has been collapsed.
Oh, then it's absolutely awesome indeed! Many hours of good fun, I hope you'll enjoy it.
Like any other mod out there the installation is a bit... peculiar. Also the way to install custom missions etc. But once you get the hang of it it's super duper easy, and man... they're great. I remember there being somewhere to find the most popular ones, or the top rated ones, or something like that. Do those first, they're true works of art.

Would you say that Styx is a good recommendation for ghost-type play style? From random reviews it seems a bit… er, secondary, I suppose?… so I thought to get into it after more prominent games are fully explored.
PS Neo-Thief was nice, especially the rich atmosphere, but many of the levels were too constrained for my liking. Plus, The City was a bit of a disappointment, but I understand that this kind of open stealth area is very difficult to create.
Comment has been collapsed.
I'd say Styx is a great recommendation because of how mandatory ghosting is. Don't expect to fight guards, on higher difficulties you die in one hit and in lower difficulties you die in 2-3 hits. You can kill regular guards stealthily but there are certain enemies that can't be killed with melee takedowns and thus require special tactics (if you really wanted to kill). Especially towards the ending there is one enemy type that will "smell" you even when they are not facing you and they kill you in one hit even if it's the easiest difficulty. Avoiding them feels awesome :) Styx is not a perfect game by any means but the stealth it offers is old school.
Comment has been collapsed.
Alright, thanks, I'll keep it on my list then :) I don't always like the “smelling” type of agents (Mark of the Ninja has them, and they are irritating, more or less flushing you out, making the game less thoughtful, more frantic), I'll how I like them in Styx when I get to it :D
Comment has been collapsed.
It'll be better in Styx cause you have a number of ways to either dispose of them or avoid them and multiple paths to take in order to achieve that and there is definitely a strategy involved in it. Mark of the Ninja was quite linear except different costumes so it didn't feel that satisfying to ghost those parts.
I can't guarantee you that you'll enjoy Styx but any stealth fan should give it a proper go.

i like taking a stealth and non-lethal approach when supported. for me nothing has lived up to the original thief, which is still the example i compare everything else against. i loved putting out torches with water arrows and blackjacking everyone on the map. i recently played dishonored as stealth and it's the only one so far that gave me at all a similar feeling to thief (not counting thief 2 and 3 -- haven't played the new one yet). dishonored didn't have the darkness element that thief had though -- don't think i've seen that done anywhere else and i'd love to see it again.
i also have enjoyed all the deus ex games (haven't played the latest one yet) and play them as stealth as much as i can. they also let me take out people nonlethally and hide the bodies but they have their own awesome thing and i don't totally think of them as stealth. alpha protocol also has a lot of what i like about deus ex.
i haven't played much hitman but i got most of them in a bundle and should probably get into them soon! i'm also curious about shadwen, but don't own that yet.
as for the group, if i get invited i'll join, but as a father of two young children i don't know how active i'll be.

I don't think I'd be very good in a gaming group, but I do like stealth games, have a bump. I can't pick my favorite one though.
Comment has been collapsed.
Ooh, I want to join your group!
I'm a huge fan of the stealth genre, should be fun to have a place to talk to other stealth fans :)
My favourite, hmm. I'm temped to name the original Thief trilogy because of course I am. Other than that, I loved Dishonored because in my opinion, they balanced the stealth and action game styles well. Also enjoyed the plot and the Whalers were sexy as heck <3 Hyped about Dishonored 2 too, even though I won't be able to buy it any time soon after the release :/
Comment has been collapsed.
I am seriously dying painfully in anticipation while I wait for Dishonored 2. When they announced that Dishonored 2 would be able to be finished without a single ability, I screamed in triumph because one of my criticisms in first Dishonored was that we were forced to get the Outsider's Mark with no option to refuse it. I also loved how low and high chaos changed the setting. I absolutely love when my playstyle affect the storyline and the ending.
Invite sent, welcome to the group :D
Comment has been collapsed.
Other than dishonored, I really like playing stealthy in the metro redux series. Dishonored had a lot of options, but Metro is so unforgiving on the higher difficulties that when you got it right, you absolutely knew it.
Comment has been collapsed.
You already know that I'm hardly a purist and ghosting is something that I very rarely get done right although I'm doing a surprising good job at it during my current MGS1 playthrough but I hope that this doesn't prevent me from getting an invite. :)
Regarding the favorite stealth game part - please don't force me to choose between Sons of Liberty and Snake Eater. IiviI I love them both, although for different reasons.
MGS3 simply does everything right. It has the perfect character development, the perfect antagonist, the perfect rival, the perfect story, the perfect (at that time) gameplay Survival Viewer ♥, the perfect boss fights totally not because many of them can be easily and hilariously cheesed, nah :3, the perfect setting, the perfect ending and overall the perfect everything. I^v^I Oh, I'm also working hard on my no-kill run (which is seriously stressful and way easier said than done) if that gives me any bonus points. :p
MGS2 on the other hand has it's small but noticeable flaws yet it certainly makes up for it. Big Shell is a truly fascinating "place" to explore, Raiden is a great lead, if you're willing to learn about him, Vamp, considering how insignificant his role in this whole opertaion might seem, is an amazing rival yes, I do have a thing for rival characters and the last ~2 hours of the game are simply a masterpiece, I can't put it any other way. Also, I might get crucified for saying this, but I feel like SoL does a few things better than the first MGS, like for example I prefer the Harrier and Ray fights over the Hind and Rex. Oh, and it also has the Casting Theater which is the most amazing special feature of any MGS game. :D
Also, I feel like your group description is begging for a Malkavian Mod reference. :p
Comment has been collapsed.
That mod is hilarious :D I really should get that mod when I play first Deus Ex game just for the giggles. The way you talk about MGS so passionately makes me want to play the earlier games. I played a lot of classic stealth games but sadly MGS is an exception, I really should play those games. By the way my favourite MGS character is Miller :P I totally adore how grumpy he is haha :D
Of course you get an invite, you don't even have to ask :P By the way after our Styx talk did you get a chance to try it out yet?
Comment has been collapsed.
True, you really should. :3 Oh boy, I really don't like riding the TPP hate bandwagon, but they portrayed my dearest Benedict really badly. :( Sure, he was nothing more than a traitor and backstabber for the most part of PW, but at the same time he was so goddamn adorable (last one is might be seen as little bit nsfw) and PW owes most of it's charm to him.
I did finish the first mission. I'm really enjoying it, although the console port isn't the greatest. I've been experiencing some pop-ins sadly. :(
Comment has been collapsed.
You have no idea how much I want to play Date with Kaz mission. I actually downloaded a PSP emulator just to play PW but I read extremely negative things about controls on the emulator and how unplayable it was so instead of trying it myself I believed them :( I swear I wanna get a PSP just for that game :D :D
I'm so sad to hear about Styx. I personally didn't have any problems with graphics. My main problem with the game was how hard it is to hang off a ledge :P I sincerely hope it won't ruin the game for you :'(
Comment has been collapsed.
Just be aware that PW is grindy. It has a great and rather emotional (even though it likes to act rather goofy often) storyline, but I'm really not a fan of some of the gameplay mechanics. For example, it doesn't have a single human boss fight; only tanks, various UGs and MGs. Well, I'm seriously considering getting a PSP for Portable Ops only so yeah... xD
Oh don't worry, things like this can't ruin a game for me. :) I'll get to it on a more serious note, just not in the coming days.
Comment has been collapsed.
I think I'll be more than happy with a save file just before Kaz mission :D Have you tried playing the game on an emulator and how were the controls? I watched some gameplay now and I'm so tempted to play it right now even though I still haven't dealt with Hitman Elusive Target No 9 and I have a fairly limited time left to do that :P
Comment has been collapsed.
I'm pretty awful at stealth, but I love it. If there's a choice between stealth and combat I always go for the sneaky-beaky like choice.

I'm probably not considered a "purist" but I do like the following two games which I assume are stealth games?
Comment has been collapsed.
Oh, I picked up Marvelous Miss Take on sale a couple of weeks ago and I'm quite excited to try it out; however, I absolutely hated Spy Chameleon. I like hunting for achievements but this will be one of the rare games I will rage quit. I actually have huge respect for you for liking that game. To me it was more about pressing the right button at the exact right time than sneaking. It felt like a game filled with quick time events and godlike reflexes which I don't have :(

I do have Thief & Thief II in my library so possibly time to break them out for a play ..

Not The Robots, really underrated as a stealth game and as a Steam product in general, the fact that you can't destroy/kill guards/enemies in order win is alone enough to say why it's much better than other stealth games and the procedurally generated levels prevent you from planning ahead and making robotic algorithms for passing levels, highly recommended.
Comment has been collapsed.
I have the game in library and I haven't played it yet. But if I bought it, it means I want to play it :D. Not The Robots looks pretty fun though. It reminded me of Volume in a way even though Volume has fixed levels but you can't kill any enemies, you have to avoid at all times.

I fucking love stealth games and stealth in general. Won't join though, like I mentioned in another thread I don't want to join a group where I'll probably be inactive. :P

I almost always choose the pacifist stealthy route first in games that allow it. When done right, those paths can be very fun or challenging in a good way! I'd be interested in joining too!
Thinking about it, I enjoyed the pacifist stealthy challenges in Metro 2033 the most! Deus Ex: Human Revolution was a great one as well!

For me the best stealth game is Splinter cell Blacklist. It's almost perfect and have integrated great features for stealth freaks. I even pre-order it back in the days. I have a friend which is hardcore stealth gamer, he completed the game without being seen by anyone, didn't touch, kill even non-leathel takedown anyone. I'm more like enthusiast compared to him but I'm doing my best to complete games as stealthy as I can. But I really like to join this group, because the concept is very dear to my heart. Also I spended with him I don't know how many damn hours completing the co-op in complete stealth mode. He owes me big time for that favor, tho
Comment has been collapsed.
I'm a massive Sam Fisher fangirl and I absolutely love Splinter Cell franchise, I even read the novels. Splinter Cell is extremely important in my gaming background because Splinter Cell 1 is the very first stealth game I have ever finished and I was around 7-8 years old at the time. I didn't have the patience I have today and I was tempted to shoot a lot but under my brother's supervision I stealthed the whole game. It means so much to me.
That being said, while I also preordered Blacklist and enjoyed it, I felt like it had far too many action scripted sequences. One minute I'm fully ghosting and not touching anybody, next minute I am dropped in the middle of an army to chase some guy while everyone tries to shoot me.
Your friend sounds a lot like me by the way. I explained my playstyle on this topic and from what you are saying, we are quite similar :D
Welcome to the group by the way :D

I love SC:BL too. Been playing it on'n'off for almost 2 years. I was happy to see it on sale 2 years ago, and bought it.
UPlay generated account name for me few months earlier when I played Ghost Recon Phantoms, and now my name is "guest-12345...", and still haven't completed co-op missions. Its really hard to make people stay in lobby more then 2 sec when they see that name :((

I do enjoy stealth games. Currently working on Dark.
As for favourite stealth game, too hard to pick. Too many good ones out there. Perhaps Tenchu: Wrath of Heaven (PS2) or Metal Gear: Ghost Babel (GB), as they were the games that got me interested in the genre.
I won't join the group, as I'm trying to limit how many I'm in now.

I actually bought Dark about 2 weeks ago on sale. It has a lot of negative reviews but after watching some gameplay videos it looked like something I would enjoy. What do you think about that game and do you believe the negative reviews have any merit?
Comment has been collapsed.
I like the game. But, I even like Vampire Rain, so not the best person to ask. :P
Comment has been collapsed.
I got Dark when it was in a bundle some time (long time) ago and after struggling to get the game running past a black screen, I ended up enjoying it. The lack of checkpoint was a bad desing choice and the dialogues are mostly a bit clingeworthy, but I enjoyed playing it nonetheless. Nothing bad to say about Dark's stealth system, if I recall correctly ;)
Comment has been collapsed.
Oh. Something for me. I don't have many stealth games on my steam account, but I played pretty much all the good ones.
Favorites: Splinter Cell, Metal Gear, Dishonored, Thief and Hitman. In that order. Hitman, excluding Absolution, felt more like a puzzle sandbox to me, so even though I like it, in stealth category it's a bit lower.
As for playstyle, I'm mainly a predator type. Killing/taking down all enemies on map without getting spotted. Chaining perfect stealth kills in various 'fancy' ways. But sometimes I like going full ghost too. Depends on game.
Comment has been collapsed.
I kinda liked Absolution actually mainly because disguises didn't really work properly so most of the time it felt like I was doing a suit only run :D They gave too much power to Instinct though, it's good that I don't really use features like that :) The brief time I tested the Instinct in Absolution, I realised that I could get away with almost anything.
Comment has been collapsed.
The problem with disguises in absolution, is that enemy can see though literally everything. They get suspicious even when they can't see my face (SWAT with a helmet on). And disguises are what I like the most about Hitman series, so Absolution is a no for me.
Comment has been collapsed.
I totally understand and respect that. I personally love suit only challenges but Absolution seriously messed up the disguises. Being recognised while wearing a SWAT helmet also happened to me and I will never forget the whole police station going hostile in a matter of one second as soon as I opened the door despite disguising myself as a police officer. Pretty unacceptable actually. Might as well go for suit only at that point :P
Comment has been collapsed.
I am going for a more obscure one. For me, it was Qasir al-Wasat. The first thing is that it take place in Arabian times. The setting alone caught my attention. What really got me is that you play an invisible creature sent to kill for others made it memorable to me. You are the villain sent to attack the hero. Not many games do that ever.
Comment has been collapsed.
I only heard of this one recently due to a giveaway on this site - nice one, Steamgifts!
It looks interesting. Extract of the review that piqued my interest:
Set in 12th century Syria, utilizing Islamic mythology and synthesizing it with Crowleyesque fantasy, and looking like a cross between Persian/Mughal miniature art and The Legend of Zelda, this game is a unique aesthetique experience. (EmirOmer)

This will be the best expansion ever!!!! I suggest reading Illidan novel if you have the time. It isn't exactly well written but it's still a nice read to get even more hyped. I'm not sure if I count as a purist according to your criteria but I love stealth games so I'd love to join your group if you'd have me.
My favorite stealth game/series is the original Thief trilogy, especially because you were a weakling not fit for combat so you needed to really be careful and couldn't go full salvage like a lot of pseudo stealth games allow you to.(still haven't played the new one, I know i should repent but after being so hyped and reading so much disappointment from old thief fans, i skipped it).
I also loved Dishonored (so hyped for the second one, I hope it won't disappoint), as it felt to me like a good successor the thief trilogy in a sense.
As for indie games, I really loved This War of mine (part of it is stealth, part of it is management), Invisible inc, The swindle, Monaco and The marvelous miss take. Have you played any of those?
Comment has been collapsed.
I am also a fan of original Thief games which is why I was skeptical at first to try out the most recent one especially after so many negative reviews. I am glad I didn't listen to any of them. Story was insanely weak but the stealth part was quite a challenge for my playstyle. I never used any arrows or any distraction items and went for full Ghost bonuses so it was actually much more challenging than Dishonored. Dishonored is also a very beloved game of mine and I can't wait to play Dishonored 2.
I played This War of Mine, I don't believe I am very good at it. I stopped at day 6 cause I was scared that one of my survivors would die. I own Invisible Inc and Marvelous Miss Take but I very recently bought these games so I haven't had a chance to play them yet while the other 2 games are on my wishlist. (I forgot the number of giveaways I entered to win Monaco :D)

What you say about it make me more curious to actually try the 'recent' (which is not recent anymore but you know what i mean) Thief game. Good thing I still have it on my 360 (got it for free a while back), it won't be as pretty as on PC but hey, it was free. I also wanna replay dishonored before the second come out if i can find time.
Invisible Inc is definitely one of the best recent stealth games I've played, I hope you'll like it.
Comment has been collapsed.
Can't say I have the favourite stealth game - I think Dishonored is closest. Other than that Hitman, Splinter Cell, Thief - if I don't have it, it's probably on my wishlist ;)
Mark of the Ninja is great too - though I preferred Terror way there (I don't remember if you could ghost it). Same thing with Batman - terrorizing bad guys all the way
Comment has been collapsed.
Path of Silence can let you ghost it although unfortunately a certain mission requires killing, it's absolutely mandatory and there is even a developer note about how they decided to make it that way. My absolute favourite path was Silence, it felt amazing to play that way.
I realised that you have 100% completions on Neon Struct and Gunpoint. I kept wanting to start Gunpoint to hunt for achievements but some invisible force stopped me I suppose. I want to play Neon Struct like mad though, I actually sent an email to the dev today :D Did you like that game?
Comment has been collapsed.
I played Mark of the Ninja so long ago that I forgot most of those things :S but if there was a way to ghost through missions I probably did that too :P
Gunpoint is fun! I was really surprised how much did I enjoy it - the only minus is how short the game is. But the mechanics and humor are great :)
Neon Struct is old school stealth - it's simple and I like it. It reminds me of first Thief a bit. It might be a bit too simple, after few levels you know exactly how to move around not to be spotted ever, but it's enjoyable nevertheless. And to 100% it you actually need to ghost through the levels and collect all collectibles at the same time, so it's nice challange
Comment has been collapsed.
Neon Struct is old school stealth
This is its exact selling point for me personally. I really want to play it so much, I hope I'll get a copy soon enough before I return to my main setup. Once I am back to my actual gaming desktop I will be focusing on Mankind Divided (I'm in summer house with a budget computer).
I actually didn't know Gunpoint was that short. I guess I should go for it but I started Alekhine's Gun and I really need to focus on that before I make a commitment to another game :(

I will be focusing on Mankind Divided
I'm jelly :< :D
Yeah, Gunpoint takes just few hours to 100% it - it's way too short. You can easily squeeze it between 2 bigger games though ;D

Damn, too many good ones out there, so i will pick one of the best for me that is probably not that popular. Commandos 2. If you never played it, ignoring the aged graphics might be hard, but with the stealth potential and all the possible strategies, the game is just beautiful.
Comment has been collapsed.
Main stealth game on Steam I enjoyed most was Dishonored. Loved that game to death, first run in both the main game and the DLC's were a ghost run; no killing anyone, no being detected. Was so hard but I loved every second of it. :) Besides that, I did some Metal Gear on the Nintendo systems, Sniper Elite V2, Payday: The Heist & PD:2, some Hitman as well as Assassins Creed a while back.
It has been a long time since I really really got back into serious stealth games, wouldn't mind it if you sent an invite. Sounds like you enjoy them a lot and may have some good recommendations of games I haven't gotten into yet :)

Ouch I'm so sorry I invited you to another group by mistake. I didn't remember adding you but apparently I did so my group's name was replaced by another group and I clicked on it without reading :P
I'd love to recommend you games. I am thinking of creating topics for games suggestions and I might even post announcements to feature a certain game I previously wrote a review on. I have some ideas I just need to bring them to life :P

Stealth is way of life. I live in shadow not because I have to but because I like it
I go stealthy in almost every game where it is possible, but favourite one? Hard question. Maybe Hitman: Blood Money or Dishonored? Mark of the ninja as interesting stealth platformer? I don't know ^^
Maybe my favourite would be Styx when I will finally buy it...

I wouldn't say i'm a 'purist', per se. I usually like games that give you a choice and don't punish you too much for messing up the stealth, like Hitman, Dishonored or the later MGSs. With the Hitman games, I approached each game in the series the same - first run is to scout the levels and kill everyone who's in my way to the objective, second run is when i go for the SA. Then the next 30 runs is perfecting everything and finding new ways to SA. The Newest Hitman is slowly becoming one of my favorites, and the Elusive Targets are a great way of raising the stakes of what a stealth game is.

Update: Stealth Purists recruitment will be on hold indefinitely. If you believe you will make a great addition to us and actually be active on the forums, feel free to apply by using one of my public giveaways. I am not looking for inactive members. Thank you.
Hello Steamgifts community. I decided to create a group called Stealth Purists which is directed at Stealth gamers only. I've always wanted to share my passion for Stealth games and meet new people who are like-minded but my previous attempts were in vain. Now that I joined Steamgifts about a month ago, I got the feeling from my past forum posts that there might be some Stealthers like me out there so I want to gather them in one group.
First and foremost, and this is the most important part, this group will not focus on giveaways. I do want to host giveaways from time to time but I don't know when that time will come because I currently have major financial problems. I don't want anyone to have any false hopes when joining this group because my focus is not winning or giving away games here.
My vision is creating and being a part of a safe and friendly place where people can spam the discussion board with all the stealth related topics they want to talk about. Maybe post their reviews if they have any or recommend games or share news/trailers of upcoming stealth games other members might not have heard of, share tactics and help each other become better ghosts. Possibilities are endless in my eyes. As you can see the focus is certainly on social interaction part.
I honestly don't care what your ratio is, I don't care how many games you have given away or won and what their real CVs are. There are only two things I care about and these 2 factors are the only requirements to join this group.
I never expected that some generous people would be hosting giveaways for this group even when I specified that the focus is not giveaways. Again while the focus is not giveaways, I still came up with some rules and guidelines for our members to follow if you want to enter these giveaways.
Your ratio or level doesn't matter and there are no obligatory giveaways. My focus is on community and I wouldn't want for anyone to join the group with false hopes. I also do not want inactive people!
To pick members (if anyone actually wants to join), I kindly ask you to write about your most favourite stealth game and why you like that game more than the other ones. Honourable mentions are also more than welcome. If you want to talk about your favourite stealth game but are not interested in joining the group I kindly ask you to mention this on your reply so I won't annoy you with group invites :D
I will go first of course. It is insanely hard for me to pick one game but I will pick the latest Hitman. The abundance of signature kills, having all the creativity and the freedom of an open world map to plan my move, the challenges that come with Suit Only and Silent Assassin and the replayability value make Hitman the best Stealth game for me personally. I spent around 25 hours on Paris mission alone while putting in around 10-15 hours each on the rest of the episodes and I loved every single second of it, even the seconds that drove me to tear out my hair :)
Here is something that should get you started if you are looking for a good stealth game.I genuinely hope that this topic will help me meet Stealth maniacs like me and pave the way to form great friendships in the near future. I hope you all have a great day no matter what genre of game you play <3
